The U of Illinois is having a 150th anniversary celebration of the
Emancipation Proclamation

Some of the events should be good, such as the Michelle Alexander talk
in February. Some in CUCPJ are rightfully skeptical about the
underlying motivation and the quality of the entire list of events, so
it would be good to attend and report back, or attend and ask great
questions.

Emancipation was not all that the history books would have you believe
it was. And the civil rights movement is not over. It is still a
legitimate act to hold signs that say things like, "I am human", "No
human is illegal", etc. Equality has not been achieved, humanity is
still denied the benefit of all of us.   -kem

UI campus to mark 150th anniversary of document

As part of the Urbana campuswide initiative Inclusive Illinois, the
University of Illinois campus will commemorate the 150th anniversary
of the Emancipation Proclamation with a series of lectures,
performances and other events related to freedom and equality.
The event series is for UI students, staff and faculty as well as
members of the Champaign-Urbana community. For more information about

A rundown:
— Jan. 19, performance: "Sing the Truth!" as Angelique Kidjo, Dianne
Reeves and Lizz Wright continue the legacies of Miriam Makeba, Abbey
Lincoln and Odetta, at 7:30 p.m., Tryon Festival Theatre, Krannert
Center for the Performing Arts.
— Jan. 24-28, art exhibit: Jacob Lawrence Toussaint L'Ouverture
Series, Krannert Art Museum.
— Jan. 24, lecture: Jacob Lawrence by Edmund B. Gaither, director and
curator, Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists, 4
p.m. College of Law Auditorium; 6 p.m. exhibit opening, Krannert Art
Museum.
— Jan. 25, teacher workshops: "Teaching and Learning about the Civil
Rights Movement," featuring Alana Murray at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., College
of Education.
— Jan. 30, film: "Mississippi, America," featuring producer Judith
McCray, 7 p.m., College of Law Auditorium.
— Jan. 31, lecture: Thavolia Glymph, author of "Out of the House of
Bondage: The Transformation of the Plantation Household," 4 p.m.,
Knight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum.
— Feb. 6, film: "Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North,"
featuring filmmaker Katrina Browne, 7 p.m., location to be announced.
— Feb. 9, "Sweet Honey In The Rock, Grammy Award-winning,
African-American women a cappella ensemble, expressing their history
as women of color via song, dance and sign language, 7:30 p.m., Tryon
Festival Theatre, Krannert.
— Feb. 19, community conversation: "Crime, Diversity and Equality," 9
a.m., Illini Rooms B & C, Illini Union (for details, contact Otis

— Feb. 20, lecture: Professor Michelle Alexander, author of "The New
