[Peace] Urbana Police proposed purchase of tasers / city council members / comment

The discussion about purchase of Tasers is on the schedule for the
Committee of the Whole meeting of the Urbana City Council on Monday, April
28.  The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. in council chambers at 400 S. Vine
Street, Urbana (across the street from Lincoln Square Village mall).

Danielle spoke with several council members. It is her impression that
there is a MAJORITY of Urbana council members ready to buy tasers. Charlie
Smyth's argument: He supports tasers, but only if they are used as an
alternative to lethal force.

Our argument: once they have them, they can change the use of force policy
at any time. The council will not even need to approve or be aware of it.

I agree with Danielle's statement, "If the council wants it to be an
alternative to lethal force, then they can trade their guns in for tasers."
