Last month, Pope Francis issued an encyclical, Laudato Si, which has 
received widespread publicity and attention. In it the Pope said many 
things of note regarding the climate and the moral necessity for action 
to stabilize it, such as: *“There is an urgent need to develop policies 
so that, in the next few years, the emission of carbon dioxide and other 
highly polluting gases can be drastically reduced, for example, 
substituting for fossil fuels and developing sources of renewable 
energy.”*He also wrote at length about the broader environmental crisis 
and its connection to poverty and economic injustice and inequality.

The Pope has taken this initiative in part to influence the important UN 
Climate Conference in Paris in December, and he is visiting the United 
States in September. On the 24^th he will speak in Washington, DC before 
a joint session of Congress and on the 25^th will speak to the UN 
General Assembly in New York City.

served on numerous boards and commissions both in Connecticut and 
nationally dealing with public policy issues.
