On January 30th at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
students launched an effort to include a divestment referendum
<#m_-56099704749929099_referendum> on the ballot for the Spring 2017
Student Senate elections. This referendum calls for the university to
divest from 16 companies that do business with Israel. As soon as the
referendum initiative began, Hillel and JUF's Israel Education Center
supported students to stand against this referendum. Together with campus
partners the students formed United Illini for a United Campus.

The language of the referendum is intentionally deceptive. It claims
to protect human rights but in fact, the real goal is to target Israel via
the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement
<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001FVXgzEQTPspTnPv4Ikkrrq9ngNPYDVyxZUndFGecbxE2DRh5gHcvJUCDvgOqDKV5ta8hlo6rqN6HzW99UApwQJpCYm9d3yt-_IJbq8HYeysR1BnxNpeX_WBHWRmLtYN2f2Ak0d-xMANSkBYap2E9dkuwJJzO-9eBb33V997FJjvfxxt9pc0TFw==&c=q-3s_DGvRP9PCBXMoM-2H-NTykldm5w8KBlBzndKIkDk5WTlyCiqVQ==&ch=O7TYjrjgdP7DAoUAjr1Us_Cx37o6Nnpu0OMBj3Yhz4-UxWkp5yRbrw==>
, which seeks to delegitimize the Jewish state. While a campus referendum
cannot harm Israel's economy, it can have detrimental effects on the Jewish
campus community and campus climate.

Even in the face of blatant disregard for process

anti-Semitic
attacks and cyber bullying, the students are working around the clock to
prevent the referendum from passing and ensure that UIUC's values of
inclusion, diversity and academic freedom are upheld.

Hillel is working closely with partners from JUF's Israel Education
Center, Israel on Campus Coalition, Israel Action Network, and Chabad to
create messaging, marketing materials, strategy and support for students.
The overall strategy includes a comprehensive outreach plan, social media
campaign and targeted communication.

Voting will take place March 8th and 9th. Throughout those two days
United Illini students will work energetically to get out the vote and
encourage their campus community to VOTE NO.

Please contact any current UIUC students you know and encourage them
to VOTE NO at vote.illinois.edu

[image: referendum]The referendum question as seen on the ballot:

Shall the students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
recommend to the Board of Trustees that the University divest, or withdraw
investments, from companies which actively normalize, engage in, or fund
recognized human rights violations of marginalized groups worldwide? Yes OR
No

Explanatory Statement:
This referendum calls upon the Board of Trustees to pull its investments
from companies that normalize, engage in or fund recognized violations of
human rights, including those of the Palestinian people and all peoples
marginalized on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, gender,
class, and ability. The authors of this referendum call for greater
accountability in how the University invests its funds, particularly those
managed under the active endowment pool. This referendum builds on a
resolution passed by the Academic Senate in April 2016, which called upon
the Board of Trustees to switch to a passively managed socially responsible
investment fund. This referendum calls on the manager's of the University
Endowment Pool to sell its holdings in the companies listed here, and does
NOT ask the University to sever all ties with these companies:

1) Mizrahi Tefahot Bank Ltd.
2) Elbit Systems Ltd.
3) ExxonMobil Corporation
4) Enbridge Inc.
5) G4S plc
6) Raytheon Company
7) General Electric
8) HP Inc.
9) Citigroup Inc.
10) The Boeing Company
11) Nestle S.A.
12) Northrup Grumman Corporation
13) Tyson Foods, Inc.
14) Motorola Solutions Inc.
15) Caterpillar Inc.
16) Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company
17) Sodexo S.A.
