Dear Peace,

Every year, Champaign County celebrates Martin Luther King Jr's legacy
with a week's worth of events. This year, 2019, the events begin on
Friday, January 18 and go through Saturday, January 26. The poverty
simulation on January 25 requires registration. The list below are

The Vineyard Church / 1500 North Lincoln, Urbana
// This annual county-wide celebration commemorates Dr. King’s legacy
by bringing together community members from Champaign County to
celebrate the mission, teachings, and legacy of Dr. King. This year’s
keynote speaker, Pastor Michael Pfleger has sought to break down the
walls of racism and denominationalism by building unity among all
people. He will respond to the theme of Keeping the Dream Alive
Through Personal Responsibility. The program will also include the
presentation of awards for the James R. Burgess, Jr. Award, Susan
Freiburg Humanitarian Award, the Doris Hoskins Prestigious Community
Service Award, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Outstanding
Achievement Award.

34th Annual Dr. MLK, Jr. Service of Celebration

// Since 1988, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocacy for Justice
Committee has awarded over 200 scholarships to local students
attending colleges such as Parkland College, University of Illinois,
and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This year we honor
the memory of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Reverend C.D.
Stuart addressing the theme: His Dream: A Way to Overcome and music
from the community choir.

34th Annual Unity Breakfast
8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

// The 2019 Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocacy for Justice
Committee and the Vineyard Church welcome community members to join in
celebrating the birthday of America’s preeminent advocate of
nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in world
history at the 34th annual Unity Breakfast. Former scholarship
recipient, Marnita Harris, will provide the keynote address to the
2019 scholarship recipients.

1401 West Green Street, Urbana
// University students, faculty, staff and community are invited to
learn about the impact Dr. King had on the world. Nathan Stephens will
highlight the importance of service work, and participants will
complete hands-on service projects including meal packaging with
Wesley Food Pantry, winter kits with CU at Home, birthday kits with
Feeding Our Kids, school supply kits for local after-school programs,
letters and caring cards for local service workers, and children’s
capes for Crisis Nursery.

// The Central Black Student Union (CBSU), University Housing and the
Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
encourage you to learn about applying a social justice lens to your
personal and professional experiences. Professors Sundiata Cha-Jua and
Helen Neville from the African American Studies Department and Dr.
Mike Schlosser, Director of the Police Training Institute will present
their research and application of integrating social justice into the
public safety industry. Participants of this workshop will learn about
applying a social equity model to their lives and future careers.

Poverty Simulation
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
School of Social Work / 1010 West Nevada Street, Urbana
// Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families. Unless you
have experienced poverty, it's difficult to truly understand. In honor
of Dr. Martin Luther King's advocacy work around poverty issues, the
School of Social Work, in partnership with the Office of the Vice
Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, invites students,
faculty, staff and community members to engage in a poverty simulation
that bridges the gap from misconception to understanding in an
interactive immersion experience. The goal of the simulation is to
promote poverty awareness, increase understanding, and inspire local
change by sensitizing participants to the realities of poverty.

Community Celebration

// This event marks the culmination of the week of events celebrating
Dr. King’s legacy. Please join us for performances by International
Prep Academy students and the University of Illinois theatre
department. The College of Education will award the winners and
honorable mention recipients of the MLK Creative Expressions Contest.
The event will have entertainment for all ages and is free of charge.
