Hi All,

There's so many different options for volunteering this week that I
couldn't possibly include them all... HOWEVER, I don't have to because
tomorrow, September 5, 2002, our annual VOLUNTEER FAIR will be held in the
Illini Union. We're talking about scores of organizations, hundreds of
opportunities -- everything from baking bread to booking bands! So swing
by the Illini Union between 10a.m. and 2 p.m. tomorrow for more options
than you can shake a stick at.

Meanwhile, read on for a select list of the finest new volunteer
opportunities:

Chill in beautiful East St. Louis! The East St. Louis Action Research
Project (ESLARP) is hosting three Outreach Weekend opportunities this
fall, September 27 & 28, October 18 & 19 and November 8 & 9. ESLARP is an
interdisciplinary project within the College of Fine and Applied Arts.
Faculty and students from several campus units collaborate with each other
and East St. Louis neighborhood groups on highly tangible and visible
projects that address the immediate and long-term needs of some of the
city's most distressed communities. Let me also just say that that St.
Louis has an _amazing_ night life; a ton of great jazz clubs, and is a
great place to go for a weekend outing. For more info check out
www.eslarp.uiuc.edu/volunteer or give a call to Justin or Vicki at
265-0202.

DUMP AND RUN -- or just BUY BUY BUY!!! The University YMCA is hosting a
HUGE(!) garage sale this week and is looking for help staffing the event.
They need folks pretty much every day (all day) and you'd get a t-shirt
and a gift certificate for participating. Contact Aimee Kandrac
<aimee at universityymca.org> for more info.

A Woman's Place will be having a 40 Hour Domestic Violence Training
beginning September 7th and ending September 30th.  It will be on Monday,
Tuesdays and Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:30.  A Woman's Place provides
service to Women and their minor children who have experienced domestic
violence.  Upon completion of this training, participants will get a
certificate recognized by the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic
Violence, be able to work on the hotline and provide direct service to
clients.  Please contact Kim Morin, volunteer coordinator if you are
intrested at 649-3657 or E-mail her at kmori38777 at yahoolcom.

Oldies but goodies:

Fun with seniors/fun with kids -- two great ages that go great together.
On September 21, 2002, the Inman Plaza is hosting a "Family Fun Day" from
9a.m. to 2p.m. Volunteers are need to play games -- that's right --
VOLUNTEER TO PLAY GAMES! During these high-stress first days of school,
what more could you ask for? Contact Joanie Gillis (352-7017) if
interested; point your browser to:
http://www.cuvolunteer.org/find/opp_profile.phtml?oid=683 for the lowdown

Now that you're in Chambana (and not some other -- slightly flatter
mid-Western state like...), volunteer with the Wizard of Oz (a little know
fact that the Emerald City was located here, eh). You heard right, the
Virginia Theatre is looking for help with their production of the Wizard
of Oz -- Sep 21, 2002 (1:30), Sep 21, 2002 (5:30). 8 lucky volunteers
will get to chill in Victorian splendor at the Virginia Theater. Contact
Stephanie Hege (398-2550) for more info; see:
http://www.cuvolunteer.org/find/opp_profile.phtml?oid=673 for the skinny.

FIGHT CANCER WITH MUSIC -- no it's not some new-age cure... The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society is sponsoring a "Light The Night Walk" and are looking
for a band to play Sep 21, 2002 (5:30-9:00 pm) -- they say they're looking
for a "lite rock type band" -- I suppose that could be interpreted rather
widely, myself :). "NOT A MUSICIAN," you say -- noooooooooooo problemo,
they're also looking for a few fools (as in jugglers, dancers, clowns,
singers) to help spruce up the evening. Contact Scott Burnsmier or Judy
Grumish 352-6399 or 451-1692 -- or check out:
http://www.cuvolunteer.org/find/opp_profile.phtml?oid=671 for more info.

GOLF ANYONE??? This one caught my eye as a somewhat bizarre request "One
volunteer will stand on each of 18 holes to pass out giveaways to
golfers." How one actually gets the ball into the whole with someone
standing on it is beyond. INTRIGUED -- find out more from Mary Dennis
398-7815 or see it for yourself at:
http://www.cuvolunteer.org/find/opp_profile.phtml?oid=653 A note to
golfers -- the event happens Sep 15, 2002 (10 am-5 pm) -- so don't blame
me if you find the Willow Pond Golf Course a bit more difficult than usual
that day.

Or put away those PUNY LITTLE GOLF BALLS and go for something that gives
you a _real_ workout -- BOWLING!!! The Eastern Prarie Special Olympics
needs help with their area bowling competition.  Keep score for athletes;
present awards; pass out lunches to athletes, coaches, volunteers -- they
even need medical volunteers (who knew Bowling was such a physical
endeavor!). 75 folks are needed on the following days -- Sep 7, 2002
(8:00am - 5:00pm), Oct 13, 2002 (8:00am - 5:00pm). Contact Georgeann
Kulton 355-1750 to learn more or check out our web listing at:
http://www.cuvolunteer.org/find/opp_profile.phtml?oid=627
