1.  Allerton Park will be hosting an Alternative Spring Break this semester.  
The goal of this project is to restore the reflecting pond, preparing the 
diversified farm for the growing season, getting the trails and gardens in 
tiptop shape, and having fun.  Applications are due March 12th.  Go to

2.  Read Across America Committee is holding its annual celebration of reading 
at Lincoln Square in Urbana on Saturday March 13th.  Last year over 700 
children participated, and they are expecting more this year.  Volunteers are 
needed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2004 to greet the children 
and help them with the activities. The  shifts are two hours each: 9 to 11, 11 
to 1, and 1 to 3, but they will be glad to adjust the schedule to accommodate 
your organization. 2004 is the Seussentenial, Dr. Seuss' 100th birthday!  We 
hope you will join us and help share the message of the role of the entire

3.  It’s that time of year again . . . no not Finals time, but Girl Scout 
Cookie time.  The Girl Scouts are looking for volunteers to help at Hutchcraft 
Van Lines in Urbana on Tuesday March 2nd and Wednesday March 3rd from 9am to 
3pm.  They would prefer 2-hour shifts, but whatever you can do would be 
wonderful.  They need help of putting together cases of cookies for the troop 
cookie managers to pick up.  If you are interested, contact Jill Rannebarger

4.  The Mathematics Department is seeking volunteers for the ICTM (Illinois
Council of Teachers of Mathematics) High School Math Contest to be held on the
UIUC campus on Saturday, May 1, 2004.  Over 2000 high school students from 
around the state will be here that day, and we need more than 100 volunteers 
to proctor, grade, enter data, usher, time oral competitions and many other 
jobs!  For most of the jobs, you don't need any special qualifications. Go to

5.  Thomasboro School is looking for students who speak Spanish to help tutor 
Spanish-speaking children from 1st to 4th grades in a variety of subjects 
including math, history, and science.  If you are interested contact Lisa 
Comstock at 643-3275.


6.  Thomas Paine School is looking for volunteers for many different 
positions.  Tutors are needed throughout the day.  Every day some volunteers 
are needed from 1-2pm.  After school tutors are needed from 3-4pm every day.  
On MWF Tutors are needed from 12:30-1pm.  Finally additional tutors are needed 
from 12:45-1:15 pm on MTWTh.  Remember the good old days of lunch period?  
Swapping lunches, throwing food, laughing, recess?  Well here is your chance 
of reliving lunch without dorm food or Ramen Noodles.  Lunchroom supervisors 
are needed from 11:15-12:50.  If any of these sound interesting to you, 
contact Terry Townsend at 384-3602.  Thomas Paine School is located at 1801 
James Cherry Drive in Urbana.


7.  Urbana Park District is looking for volunteers to help coach a variety of 
ages to teach them the basic concepts of soccer.  A strong knowledge of soccer 
is NOT required, but some knowledge is needed.  Games are on Saturday morning, 
and practices are early evenings on weekdays.  Locations vary throughout 
Urbana.  Time requirements are approx 3-4 hours a week.  Practices begin March
