1. Make a Difference Drive

The Office of Volunteer Programs is holding our annual Make A 
Difference Drive. The Make a Difference Drive (MADD) is a two-
week long donation drive requesting the most needed items in 
the community. This year, MADD will begin on Monday, October 
11, 2004 and the final drop-off date for the items will be on 
Friday, October 22, 2004 at 4:00PM. The items should be 
dropped off at the OVP office, which is located in 277 Illini 
Union, in the RSO complex. The top twenty most requested 
items are as follows: Markers, Diapers, Crayons, Pencils, 
Razors, Pens, Folders, Tissue, Coloring Books, Glue, 
Construction Paper, Notebooks, Mini Shampoo, Toothbrushes, 
Toothpaste, Mini Lotion, Mini Soap, Underwear, Baby Wipes, 
and Socks.


 
2. Habitat for Humanity’s HOMEWORKS

Looking for a fun way to help out in the community?  How 
about volunteering at HOMEWORKS, Habitat for Humanity's home 
improvement resale store? HOMEWORKS is a resale warehouse 
selling new and gently used furniture, household items, 
gardening supplies, and building materials to the public at 
greatly discounted prices. The 9,000 sq. foot store opened in 
May 2003 and is almost completely volunteer run. All proceeds 
go to fund local Habitat for Humanity home building projects.

Customer Service Volunteers needed!
Do you like helping customers?  Enjoy meeting new people?  
We've got the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!  
Volunteers are needed during store hours to help run the 
resale store.  Assist customers with questions, help accept 
drop-off donations, and help to price, clean and display new 
donations.  Volunteers needed Wed. 3PM-7PM, Fri. & Sat. 9AM-
4PM. If you're interested, please contact Angela Miller,

3. MDA Great Walk - Moving for Muscles
The Muscular Dystrophy Association needs volunteers to help 
with their Great Walk-Moving for Muscle. Volunteers would 
help with registration, lunch and along the walk route. For 
volunteering, you will receive a free t-shirt and lunch. 
Volunteers would be needed Saturday, October 9, 8:00 AM till 
about 10:30 AM.  It will be held at Meadowbrook Park in 
Urbana. Please call Barb at (217) 351-1853 to sign up!



4. Repack Rice

The Eastern Illinois Foodbank has received bulk rice and 
needs help repacking the large bags into smaller containers! 
The Eastern Illinois Foodbank is a nonprofit organization 
that acquires, stores, maintains and distributes quantities 
of food products and essentials to hungry people through 
Eastern Illinois, thus alleviating hunger and nourishing 
stronger communities. The Eastern Illinois Foodbank would 
like anyone who would like to help. The project day is 
tentatively set for Saturday, Oct. 9th. We are looking for as 
many volunteers as possible. For more information, contact

5. Apples, Pumpkins, and Gourds Galore!

Come enjoy and help with a family program at the Early 
American Museum at the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve in 
Mahomet, on October 16th! Volunteers are needed to help 
participants with decorating pumpkins, painting pictures in 
the Pumpkin/Picture Patch, playing games in the gardens and 
tasting soul cakes and cider. The event will take place on 
October 16, 1PM-4PM. Help the Museum staff make this popular

6. Plant at Tree at a Certified Audubon Cooperative 
Sanctuary! 

Volunteers will plant trees at beautiful Lake of the Woods 
Golf Course in Mahomet. This course was recently certified as 
an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. It is one of only 37 
courses in Illinois to achieve this status! Volunteers are 
needed to help plant trees Oct 23, 9:00AM-12:00PM. Wear 
clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty.  Meet at the Lake 
of the Woods Golf Course Maintenance Shop at 405 North Lake 
of the Woods Road in Mahomet. Contact Kristina Hubert at

7. Phone-a-thon for Health Care Justice

Please consider volunteering for CCHCC's 2004 Phone-A-Thon!! 
CCHCC 2004 PHONE-A-THON FOR HEALTH CARE JUSTICE runs October 
18th-21st each night from 5:30PM-9:00PM at the CCHCC office 
in downtown Champaign. FREE FOOD will be provided by C-U's 
best restaurants! TRANSPORTATION to CCHCC provided upon 
request. 

By volunteering for the Phone-A-Thon, you'll help us ask 
members to advocate for Medicare reform: Bring REAL help to 
Medicare beneficiaries who cannot afford life-saving 
medicines, Allow Medicare to negotiate with drug companies 
for lower prices for prescriptions, Prevent increasing 
Medicare premiums that will overwhelm seniors and force them 
to choose between food and medicine, Help our seniors live 
with dignity, without fear of being bankrupted by health care 
costs, The Phone-A-Thon is also CCHCC's annual drive to raise 
funds that allow us to work for quality, affordable health

8. Self-Help Center needs Aid

The center is looking for volunteers to help with a 
conference on Saturday, Oct. 23rd at The Forum at Carle, 
Urbana. The conference is from 8AM-5PM and volunteers who can 
help in at least two-hour segments are needed. Volunteers 
would help with registration and book sales from 8AM-10AM, 
10AM-12PM, 12PM-2PM and 2PM-4:15PM. Students would also have 
fees waived for registration if they want to attend sessions 
after volunteering. The conference is on self-help groups and 
the theme is The Strength in Us: How Mutual Aid Self Help 
Groups Promote Hope, Healing and Transformation. The

9. Halloween Funfest

Boo! Feeling spooky? Get a group of friends together to help 
out at Halloween Funfest. Volunteers will be needed to help 
run game/activity booths for children. Little ghosts and 
goblins will stop by your booth to participate in your game 
and to "trick-or-treat". Don't miss the fun! The event will 
take place at Lincoln Square Mall on Oct 29, 5:30PM-8:00PM. 
Volunteers are asked to dress in costume. Food will be 
provided during clean up. Contact Kristi Bolton at (217) 398-
