1.	Pull for Access

Join the Office of Volunteer Programs with the collection of 
pop tabs for PACE, INC.(Persons Assuming Control of their 
Environment). It’s so simple and helps so much! Collect pop 
tabs and turn them into the Office of Volunteer Programs. The 
pop tabs you collect help assist PACE, INC. serve people who 
have disabilities or disability-related concerns. It provides 
advocacy, independent living counseling, peer counseling, 
information and referral, skills training, and specific 
services, such as sign language interpreter referral, free 
equipment loan program and speakers bureau. We’ll be 
collecting all year, so save up the tabs and bring them into 
the OVP in room 277 of the Illini Union whenever you can. For

2. United Way

United Way is looking for a smart, technically sound student 
who wants to volunteer for a few weeks part-time when 
available. The student will be working on Publisher shrinking 
down storyboards, laminating and adhering velcro. This is a 
great way to give back to an organization that has given so 
much to the community. They need help this week or beginning 
of next week. Contact Kelly Leusch at 352-5151 or

3. Service and Justice Outreach Volunteer Fair

Service and Justice Outreach will be holding a long-term 
volunteer fair on Sunday September 26 from 4 pm to 7 pm in 
the cafeteria of Newman Hall, on the corner of 6th St. and 
Armory.  There will be recruiters from many year-long 
volunteer programs (as well as some summer programs) there to 
answer questions and provide information to students who are 
thinking about taking a year off after graduation to 
volunteer. If this is something you've thought about, come on 
out and bring a friend! For more information you can contact

4. Early American Museum 
 
Celebrate the ingenuity of the American Worker with the 
Champaign County Forest Preserve District! Volunteer your 
time at the Early American Museum in Mahomet. On September 
18th, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. many hands on activities and old 
time crafts and demonstrations will be available for visitors 
to do and see. Volunteers can help welcome participants, 
assist the Museum staff and much more! Contact Kristina

5. Acts as a Tutor or Classroom Aide

Urbana Middle School is looking for students to tutor one-on-
one in math, science, or English or serve as a classroom 
aide. The days range between Monday through Friday, 8:30AM-
3:30PM or 4-5. Students must commit for an entire semester.

6. BINGO and Accordions
 
Love to play bingo? Want to help a senior with bingo? Then 
this opportunity is for you! Volunteers will assist residents 
of Champaign County Nursing Home with bingo cards, socialize 
and have fun. This activity takes place once a week on 
Saturdays from 2 to 3:30PM. 

Are you one of the few people who know how to play an 
accordion? Come share your musical skills for the residents 
of Champaign County Nursing Home during their annual October 
Fest social on September 30.

7. Clothing Closet Volunteer

Salt & Light is looking for volunteers who would be 
interested in working with their clothing closet. 
Responsibilities would include sorting and hanging of 
clothing, stocking of shelves and general maintenance of 
sorting and display areas. Salt & Light is an organization 
that helps the residents of Champaign County, who are at or 
below the poverty level, with their physical needs. Time 
involvement is left up to the volunteer with availability M-F 
from 9am to 4pm. Contact Jenny Montgomery at (217) 355-5654

8. Light the Night Team

Build a Team to raise funds to support people with cancer, 
and to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society use the funds 
raised for critical cancer research, and patients’ services. 
This is an opportunity for you to help fight cancer. Form a 
Light The Night Team of friends, family members, neighbors, 
church members, and or co-workers. You can be a team by 
yourself, but it is more fun with others! Team Captains MUST 
FIRST register their Team by calling Kristina Oncken toll-
free at 1-888-451-1692. Once this has been done, then the 
other Team members may go online and register at 
www.lightthenight.org/il. The night of the Walk is Saturday, 
October 2, 2004 at West Side Park in Champaign, Illinois. 
Registration begins at 5:30pm. The walk will start promptly 
at 7:00pm. There will be food and entertainment provided, so 
you will need to get there at 5:30pm. The walk event will end 
around 9:30 pm. If you have any additional questions you may 
call Kristine Oncken, the Central Illinois Campaign Manager 
for the Light the Night Walks at 1-888-451-1692, or Judy 
Grumish (committee chair in Champaign) at 217-352-6399.
