with “Friday Night Drop-Ins,” a program that targets middle
school students. The program takes place from 3-7pm on Friday
nights. During the program, students have access to video
games, basketball, volleyball, and much more. Special events,
such as a trip to a haunted house, a movie at the Virginia
Theater, and a Chicago Bulls game are also being planned. If
you are interested in volunteering your time to this great
program, please email Meghan Brooks at
meghan.brooks at cparkdistrict.com.
2. Champaign Public Library
Have you ever messed up the books at the library? Well now’s
your chance to help the library look better than ever before.
The Champaign Public Library is looking for volunteers to
reshelf books and check to make sure that materials (books,
videos, etc.) are neat and orderly on the shelf at anytime
the library is open. If you are a very people oriented
individual and want to brighten up someone’s day, you might
want to try volunteering to deliver materials to homebound
patrons between 9AM-5PM on weekdays. They’ll appreciate it
more than you know. Contact Mary E. Bissey at (217) 356-1970
for more information.
3. Painting Time
Youth For Christ needs 10-12 volunteers to help paint their

Service and Justice Outreach will be holding a long-term
volunteer fair on Sunday September 26 from 4 pm to 7 pm in
the cafeteria of Newman Hall, on the corner of 6th St. and
Armory. There will be recruiters from many yearlong volunteer
programs (as well as some summer programs) there to answer
questions and provide information to students who are
thinking about taking a year off after graduation to
volunteer. If this is something you’ve thought about, come on
out and bring a friend! For more information you can contact
Libby Kalmbach at kalmbach at uiuc.edu.

6. Disaster Prevention and Safety Instructor
This is an outreach program designed to teach people in this
community strategies and tips to prepare for disasters and
emergencies. The goal is to minimize, and in many cases
eliminate the impact disasters can have on individuals and
the community as a whole. Standardized Red Cross materials
and training are available. There are dozens of areas of
topics and audience-specific presentations available.
Together, we can save a life! For more information email the
Director at redcross at soltec.net or call 344-2800.
Another opportunity to help others available through the Red
Cross is to become a Health and Safety Instructor.
Instructors train people in this community to save lives in
an emergency. Volunteers can teach a wide array of life-
saving health and safety topics, ranging from CPR & First
Aid, to lifeguarding and baby-sitting skills. Interested
individuals must undergo 17 hours of training and a 2-hour
pre-test. The times are flexible and are between four and
nine hours each. Usually courses are held at the Red Cross
Office in Urbana, but can be arranged on-location. Together,
we can save a life. For more information email Susan Connelly
at redcross at soltec.net or call (217)344-2800.
