1. National Volunteer Week

APRIL 16th through APRIL 23rd is National Volunteer Week. The Office of Volunteer Programs is planning a week of donation drives and service activities for that week. Are you interested in sponsoring a drive or participating in a volunteer project that week? If so, contact Staci Provezis at ovp at uiuc.edu <mailto:ovp at uiuc.edu> . 

 

2. Volunteer Recognition Event

If you volunteer, come and join us in celebrating National Volunteer Week by recognizing UIUC volunteers. The event will take place on Friday, APRIL 22 at NOON to 2pm in the Illini Union Rec Room (in the basement of the Illini Union). You can stop in anytime; The awards will be given out at 12 to 12:30, and the rest of the time will be for fun. There will be FREE food, bowling, and a whole lot of fun! If you're interested in celebrating with us, please stop by the Office of Volunteer Programs (Rm. 277 Illini Union) and pick up a BUTTON, it will be your entry ticket into the event. 3.  Office of Volunteer Programs: Paid Office Assistant Positions for 2005/2006

The Office of Volunteer Programs is looking for office assistants for the next academic year.  Don't fret - this position is PAID.  This job requires a 10-12 hour commitment per week.  The office is open between 9am-5pm.  On occasion, nights and weekends may be requested; however, the bulk of the work is during office hours.  Applicants must have a strong background in community service and volunteerism.  Tech skills will be highly valued (website management, Excel, etc). If you are interested in applying, pick up an application at 420 Illini Union (in the Employment Office).  When filling out the application, specify that the application is for the OVP position.  Applications must be handed in by May 2nd.

 

 

SOME GREAT GROUP ACTIVITIES (#4 - #7):

4. Ebertfest: Champaign Park District

Join us for the 7th Annual "Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival", with Roger Ebert, himself! Volunteers are needed to take tickets, serve as ushers, merchandise, and to help in concessions. All volunteers will receive one ticket to the film of their choice based on availability. Dates Include: APRIL 20 (Evening), APRIL 21 (Afternoon & Evening), APRIL 22 (Afternoon & Evening), APRIL 23 (Afternoon & Evening), and APRIL 24 (Afternoon). Many volunteers are needed! 5. Salt & Light: Help Organize our Facility

Salt & Light currently operates a food pantry and a clothing closet through which they distribute clothing, furniture, small and large appliances, household items, and toys as well. They are also in the process of implementing a tutoring program for k-12 grades. Salt & Light is looking for volunteers to help organize the facility anytime on APRIL 18, 19, 21, and 22, anywhere from 10AM to 5PM. 6. Champaign County Forest Preserve: Making a Difference in the Environment

The Champaign Country Forest Preserve oversees more than 3,500 acres at four preserves located throughout Champaign County. They are looking for volunteers to help make a difference in the environment and natural systems by controlling exotic species, walking the "no mow" areas to pick up debris, collecting native wildflower seed, assisting with the renovation of an outdoor pavilion, picking up sticks before the mowing season and so much more! Volunteers are welcome to come help out APRIL 18, 19, 20, 21, and/or 22 in the A.M. or P.M. hours. Please contact Kristina Hubert at (217) 586-3360 for further information. Help the environment clean up the environment as a way to celebrate Earth Day (APRIL 22). 

 

7. Allerton Park: Garden Workday

Allerton Park is a 1500-acre natural area with formal gardens, statuary, 30,000+ square foot manor house and over 14 miles of hiking trails. Numerous programs offer a variety of volunteer opportunities. Help maintain the formal gardens surrounding the Visitor Center and Conference Center. Volunteers may help with a special project or assist with watering, weeding, and cutting back or deadheading flowers. Volunteers are needed Apr 20, 2005 from 9am-11am. Please contact Kimberly Petzing at (217) 244-1035 for further information. 

 

8. Goat-A-Palooza!!!

On Friday, APRIL 22 you could help a group called Goat-a-palooza, who works with Heifer International, with an event on the Quad, to help raise money and awareness for world hunger issues throughout the world. Heifer International works overseas to send farm animals to starving families and teaches them to be self-sufficient using the goods that this animal provides such as milk in order to get out of poverty and starvation. To continue to raise money and awareness, we ask that volunteers join us on the Quad, at a reserved area in front of the Union, to help sell t-shirts, raffle tickets, baked goodies, and also to face paint and sell balloon animals. Additionally we will be having LIVE GOATS! Yes, live goats on the Quad! Goats are just one of the many animals that Heifer International sends abroad to families. To help with this great cause, please visit www.heifer.org <http://www.heifer.org/>  for more information. Please also tell others who might be interested, each person's help will count. We look forward to your participation in this event. 
 

9. Red Cross Blood Drive

The American Red Cross is hosting a blood drive next week.

DAYS: Tuesday, April 19 to Friday, April 22nd 

TIME: Daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

WHERE: Illini Union in room 314

No appointments are necessary and walk-ins are welcome.

Please help save a life.

 

 

10. Walk For Africa

The 2nd Annual Walk For Africa will be held on Saturday, April 30 at 12:30 on the Quad.  We are looking for volunteers AND walkers.  VOLUNTEERS: We will need help with setup, cleanup, and traffic control.  Please contact Lindsay at lbaran at uiuc.edu if you'd like to volunteer!  WALKERS: Registration is $15 (minimum, but raise as much as you can!) and includes participation in the Walk, entertainment and a t-shirt! 11.  Provena Covenant Medical Center's Grandma's Attic Sale

The auxiliary at Provena Covenant Medical Center is hosting "Grandma's Attic Sale", a fundraiser that benefits scholarships and other service projects of the auxiliary. 

We are asking for volunteers to donate items such as linens, workable appliances, lamps, books,  jewelry, dishes, household items, funiture, knickknacks, clean and wearable clothing, etc.  These items can be dropped off at the Provena Covenant front lobby between 9am-1pm on April 16, May 14, or May 28, 2005. 

We would also like to invite volunteers to participate in the actual sale on June 25, 2005.  Please contact AmandaJHolt at ProvenaHealth.com or 217-337-2378 to participate in the event.

 

12. Register for LINC 

By registering for LINC  (ENG 199/AL1/CRN34375) you could gain GAIN

And don't worry -- it's not just for engineers. LINC: Learning in Community is open to undergraduates in ALL colleges, ALL majors, and ALL years.  If you are the type of person that wants to make a real difference and learn at the same time, then this course is for you.  Work in teams with fellow undergrads on projects for local and international non-profits by registering for LINC.

13. ICTM Volunteers 

The Mathematics Department is seeking volunteers for the ICTM (Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics) High School Math Contest to be held on the UIUC campus on Saturday, April 30, 2005. Over 2000 high school students from around the state will be there so an estimate of 200 volunteers are needed to proctor, grade, enter data, usher, time oral competitions and many others. Special qualifications are not needed for most of the jobs. Note that some volunteers are also needed on Sat. APRIL 2 and during the week before APRIL 30. 

 

14. Free Recycling Drop-Off Site: Help Recycle!

The city of Champaign provides a 24-hour, 7 days a week, free recycling drop-off site. The drop-off site is open to the public and is located at 1701 Hagan Drive in Champaign, about a five minute drive from campus.  To reach the drop-off site from campus, take Prospect Road North. Turn Right (East) onto Bloomington Road.  Turn Left (North) onto Hagan Road, a stoplight one block down.  The drop-off site will be on the right.  Materials should be separated into three groups: 1) aluminum, tin, plastic (#1-#6), and glass containers 2) paper and newspaper and 3) cardboard. Help our community recycle!!!
