Welcome back! Hope you have a great Spring semester. Here’s
some volunteer opportunities to get your year started by
lending a helping hand.

1. Learn More About AVODAH…JOIN A FREE CONFERENCE CALL!
AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps, is a one-year program
combining work for social change, Jewish learning and
community building in NYC and Washington DC! By joining you
are able to make positive changes on the issues you care
about--hunger, literacy, public health, domestic violence
and housing. There is no cost for AVODAH. All participants
receive health insurance as well as a living stipend to pay
for food, rent and other expenses. Student loan deferrals
are available. All participants receive a $1,000 exit
stipend and most qualify for an AmeriCorps Education Award
voucher of up to $4,725 for continued education or repayment

To join the conference call, you must RSVP to Stosh Cotler
at cotler at avodah.net. The call will be hosted by AVODAH
alumni and there will be time on the call for Q and A. There
are two call dates and times: February 1, 2005 at 7p.m. and
February 2, 2005 at 4p.m.
2. Crisis Line Volunteer Training
Upcoming Crisis Line volunteer training is an opportunity to
gain hands-on clinical experience. Crisis Line volunteers
handle a variety of calls from information and referral,
supportive listening, and suicide prevention. For this
training, it is required that volunteers are available to
take calls over the summer months.
There is a required 20-hour training for Crisis Line
volunteers. The next training dates are February 3 (from 6-9
pm), 5 (from 2-6 pm), 10 (from 6-9 pm) and 12 (from 2-6 pm).
Six hours of on-the-job training are also required following
these training sessions.
The next step to volunteering is to complete an agency
volunteer application. For further information contact Jake

3. Carle Hospital Volunteer Program
Carle Hospital is currently taking applications for the
Spring semester now thru January 24, 2005. In order to
volunteer you must fill out an application and immunization
form. You can pick up these forms at the Office of Volunteer
Programs located in room 277 Illini Union or at Carle
Hospital Volunteer Office North Tower 1. In addition you
must attend a mandatory information meeting on January 25,
and Orientation on February 1, 2005. Both meetings will be
held at 5:30 pm in the Pollard Auditorium. All applications
and immunization records must be in the Carle Hospital
Volunteer Office by January 24, 2005. For more information

4. First United Methodist Church (FUMC) After-School Program
FUMC has started an after school program entitled' Energy
Detectives'. This is a 12 week program that meets once a
week, for two hours on Thursday. The program begins Feb.
3rd, and is for participants who are the ages of 8-10 5th
grade students from local public schools, nominated by their
teachers. The goal is to lead youth in exploring energy use
in the downtown neighborhood, while also developing skills
in leadership, problem-solving and computer applications.
Volunteers are needed to act in a mentor capacity.
Volunteers should have an interest and or experience in
either teaching or energy conservation, enjoy young
adolescents, and are able and willing to give your time for
2 hours a week for 12 weeks. Please note that transportation

5. School Supply Drive
The Bureau of Educational Research and the International
Programs Office are collaborating to sponsor a school supply
drive from Tuesday, January 11th to Tuesday, February 1st.
Donated items will be given to local schools to help
replenish depleted supplies. Items will also be sent to
several schools located overseas. Donations of cash will be
used to purchase supplies, or to support packaging and
shipping for the international schools.
Some suggested items include, # 2 pencils, colored pencils,
markers, ball point pens, hand held sharpeners, 2pocket
folders, maps, globes and etc. To receive a complete list of

Donations may be left in the Bureau (room 236 Education
Building) or the Student Academic Affairs Office (room 110
Education Building).
6. Rape Crisis Services
Rape Crisis Services is holding a 40 hour training for
volunteers beginning February 1st and continuing for 7
weeks. Volunteers of diverse populations are encouraged to

7. Tutor Needed
A student at Centennial High School is looking for a tutor.
The student is a Freshman and has a mild mental impairment.
If interested please call Laura Ippolito at 351-3951 between
the hours of 3-5p.m. or email her at

8. Southside School Fun Night
South Side Elementary School PTA is hosting Fun Night, the
annual school carnival. Volunteers are needed to staff
games, help with concession sales and cleanup. This event
will take place on Friday February 4, 2005 from 6-9 p.m. For

9. Spring Break at Allerton Park
Spend spring break at Allerton Park! Students from all
areas of study may apply to spend spring break at the
historic Allerton House and earn service/volunteer hours
working on restoration projects, gardening, and preparing
the park for another season of activity. Room and board
will be provided for the week but space is limited. For

10. VIP Recruitment Nights
Volunteer Illini Projects (VIP) will be having their
recruitment nights Wednesday, January 19th and Thursday,
January 20th in the Ballroom in the Illini Union at 7:00pm.

organization.
