1. Westview Elementary Fun Fest

Westview Elementary School (703 E. Russell, Champaign) needs volunteers to run Carnival Classroom Games (ie; fishing pond, dart throw, basketball toss, pop toss, cake walk, fortune teller etc.) The event includes: hot dogs, chips, drink, ice cream sandwiches meal from 6-6:30; Carnival games 6:30-8:00; and a Silent Auction 6:30-7:30. 2. Rape Crisis Services
Rape Crisis Services is holding a 40-hour training for volunteers beginning February 1st and continuing for 7 weeks. Volunteers of diverse populations are encouraged to apply. For more information contact Nora at 355-5214 or sagen at awomansfund.org <mailto:sagen at awomansfund.org> 

 

3. Urban Youth Empowerment/Employment Program Volunteers needed

The Urban Youth Empowerment/Employment Program targets 18-21 year olds who have dropped out of high school and/or been adjudicated and who are interested in trying to make a fresh start. The YEP program offers assessments to determine their math and reading levels as well as career plans to help them work toward achieving their GED and pursuing higher education and/or jobs thus striving to help them achieve results to positively impact society. 4. Crisis Line Volunteer Training 
Upcoming Crisis Line volunteer training is an opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience. Crisis Line volunteers handle a variety of calls from information and referral, supportive listening, and suicide prevention. For this training, it is required that volunteers are available to take calls over the summer months.

There is a required 20-hour training for Crisis Line volunteers. The next training dates are February 3 (from 6-9 pm), 5 (from 2-6 pm), 10 (from 6-9 pm) and 12 (from 2-6 pm).
Six hours of on-the-job training are also required following these training sessions.
The next step to volunteering is to complete an agency volunteer application. For further information contact Jake Livengood, Crisis Line coordinator, at jlivengood at mhcenter.org or by phone at 373-2430, extension 124.

5. Illini Mentor Program   
 
Be a role model. Do some good. Join the Illini Mentor Program, a University of Illinois registered student organization that provides students with the chance to make a real difference in the life of a kid. Members of the Illini Mentor Program form strong mentoring relationships with local kids of all ages and backgrounds in the Champaign-Urbana community, based on common interests. The program is having an informational meeting Wednesday, January 26 at 7:30 PM in Greg Hall. 6. First United Methodist Church (FUMC) After-School Program
FUMC has started an after school program entitled "Energy Detectives." This is a 12-week program that meets once a week, for two hours on Thursday. The program begins Feb. 3rd, and is for participants who are the ages of 8-10 5th grade students from local public schools, nominated by their teachers. The goal is to lead youth in exploring energy use in the downtown neighborhood, while also developing skills in leadership, problem-solving and computer applications.

Volunteers are needed to act in a mentor capacity. Volunteers should have an interest and or experience in either teaching or energy conservation, enjoy young adolescents, and are able and willing to give your time for 2 hours a week for 12 weeks. 7. Reading Companion needed

A retired University of Illinois professor needs assistance once a week for an hour. He needs someone to drive to his home and read to him. The readings will often be from the newspaper. If interested please contact his wife, Mrs. Britsky, at 367-0854.

 

8. Spring Break at Allerton Park
Spend spring break at Allerton Park!  Students from all areas of study may apply to spend spring break at the historic Allerton House and earn service/volunteer hours working on restoration projects, gardening, and preparing the park for another season of activity.  Room and board will be provided for the week but space is limited. 9. Alpha Phi Omega Info Nights

 Alpha Phi Omega, a National Co-Ed Service Fraternity, will be having information nights Tuesday, Jan. 25, Wednesday, Jan. 26, and Thursday Jan. 27 in 110 Lincoln at 7:30pm. Please come to one of the evenings if you are interested in becoming a member. 10. Tutor Needed
A student at Centennial High School is looking for a tutor. The student is a Freshman and has a mild mental impairment. If interested please call Laura Ippolito at 351-3951 between the hours of 3-5p.m. or email her at ippolito at champaignschools.org.

11. Help the homeless

The First Presbyterian Church of Champaign (FPCC) has agreed to act as an Annex to the Times Center until the middle of April.  If the Times Center has more than 50 men, needing temporary shelter, on any given night, FPCC will house up to 15 men from 9:00 pm until 7:00 am.  All other services for these men are handled at the Times Center, including food, clothing, and showers.  At least two volunteers (men or a man and a woman) spend the night and additional volunteers are needed daily to drive a van in the evening and again in the morning.  You can volunteer to stay at FPCC for the entire night (8:30 pm until 7:15 am), or you can stay for either of two shifts (8:30 pm - 2:00 am or from 1:30 am - 7:15 am).  The van driver can work in the evening transporting the men from the Times Center to FPCC (8:45 pm - 9:45 pm) and/or in the morning returning the men to the Times Center in time for breakfast (6:30 am - 7:30 am).

12. Southside School Fun Night
South Side Elementary School PTA is hosting Fun Night, the annual school carnival. Volunteers are needed to staff games, help with concession sales and cleanup. This event will take place on Friday February 4, 2005 from 6-9 p.m. For more information contact Caren Spencer-Smith at (217) 359-4252.
