1. A Service Showcase

A Service Showcase will be held on Wednesday, MARCH 9 from 10AM to 2PM in Illini Room C in the Illini Union. The Service Showcase will be a great opportunity to learn more about service organizations, participate in a service activity, meet others with an interest in volunteering, and win great prizes and get free goodies! Additionally, we will also be holding a food drive to donate to Salt & Light, so please help us out by bringing in some canned goods. All in all, it should be a great time! 2. Attention Groups: The American Girl, Girl Scout Fundraiser needs your help

The American Girl, Girl Scout Fundraiser, is taking place Saturday March 5th. They need volunteers Friday (March 4th) from 1-4 at Robeson Hall to assemble snack boxes for the people who are attending the event. They expect 1500 people! This volunteer opportunity should be a fun way to hang out with your group and help support this agency. 3. Ten Thousand Villages

Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit store in Downtown Champaign, is having an Oriental Rug Event, March 9 - 12.  We need 8 to 10 people (strong backs) to unload 300 rugs of various sizes on Tuesday, March 8, at 5 p.m. and help roll them out.  Then on Saturday, March 12 at 6 p.m. we need help rolling up the rugs and loading them in a van. Each time will be about 2 hours or so. 4. Family Service Senior Resource Center: Meals on Wheels

The Family Service Senior Resource Center, who assist persons 60 years of age and over to maximize independence through personalized services and linkage to community resources in need of a Meals on Wheels Delivery Person. This person would provide hot nutritious meals to those who are not able to leave their homes or cook meals themselves. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license and auto insurance. Volunteers are not responsible for cooking meals; they will be prepared from the Illini Union and will just need delivering. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday, approximately 10:30AM - 12:30PM; schedules and time commitment are flexible. If you are interested in a great volunteering opportunity that helps to provide a gracious service to our community's seniors, then this might be for you! 5. Carrie Busey Elementary School Carnival

Carrie Busey Elementary School is in need of volunteers for the school's carnival. It is a night of great fun for our students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Our greatest need is for volunteers to run the various games (collect tickets, explain games, paint faces, and distribute prizes). The carnival is on Friday, MARCH 11, 2005 from 5 - 8PM at Carrie Busey Elementary School, 1605 W. Kirby Ave.; Champaign. Help bring smiles to young children's faces by participating in this fun activity! 6. Alternative Spring Break 

Each year, Alternative Spring Break organizes service trips during fall, winter, and spring breaks. On each trip, volunteers deal with a specific social, political, or environmental issue and gain experience and knowledge working with these issues. To help fund their upcoming spring break trip, ASB members need your help! Your attendance at the following fun-filled events will benefit this great service project:

7. SPSF & VEYA: Tutors/Mentors Needed!
Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity where you can help shape the 
youths of the future? The Single Parent Scholarship Foundation (SPSF) and Visionaries Educating Youths and Adults (VEYA) are seeking African American
female/male adult volunteers to tutor and mentor African American at-risk female/male youths. SPSF provides the tutoring mentoring services for the female youths. The program date and time for volunteering is Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:30pm to 7pm. VEYA provides the tutoring/mentoring services for the male youths on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5pm-7pm. 8.  Daffodil Days: Gift of Hope

The Daffodil is a bright flower that can send the message of Hope to anyone.  Take part in the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days and send the message of HOPE to a cancer patient.  Your small donation can make a large difference in the life of another. The Gift of Hope is a bouquet of daffodils given in a lovely vase with information on American Cancer Society services and education.  The Gift of Hope is an anonymously given bouquet that is delivered to a cancer patient in a local hospital or treatment center.  Gifts of Hope are not delivered to specific patients, nor are the donor's names attached to a gift.  They are truly anonymous gifts of joy! Your donation of $15 can brighten the day of a cancer patient and help the American Cancer Society with their mission to eliminate cancer through research, education, advocacy and services. 9. Green Meadows Girl Scouts

Girl Scout cookies are back! However, before they can be delivered and sold, your local Girl Scouts need your help! On Tuesday, MARCH 8, 2005 and Wednesday, MARCH 9, 2005 cases of Girl Scout cookies will be at Hutchcraft Van Service waiting for us to sort them by each troop order. Hutchcraft is located on 1614 N. Lincoln Avenue in Urbana.  We are looking for volunteers to help us sort the cases by troop. We start at 8:45 a.m. and work until 3:00 p.m. both days.  We would like each volunteer to stay at least 2 hours but it's not mandatory. Interested volunteers should show up on-site.  

 

10. ICTM Volunteers 

The Mathematics Department is seeking volunteers for the ICTM (Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics) High School Math Contest to be held on the UIUC campus on Saturday, April 30, 2005. Over 2000 high school students from around the state will be there so an estimate of 200 volunteers are needed to proctor, grade, enter data, usher, time oral competitions and many others. Special qualifications are not needed for most of the jobs. Note that some volunteers are also needed on Sat. April 2 and during the week before April 30.

11. INSTITUTE ON PHILANTHROPY AND VOLUNTARY SERVICE 
Make a difference this summer by attending the Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service (IPVS)! This internship program is intended for students who are involved in volunteer activities and are excited about exploring professional opportunities in the non-profit sector.

 

IPVS is ideal for undergraduate student leaders who are engaged in service programs on and off their campuses. Upon acceptance, students are enrolled at Georgetown University and are placed in a nonprofit internship for eight weeks. Part of the Institute experience will include hands on activities such as planning service projects and organizing fundraising activities. The dates of the internship are from June 4-July 30,2005. Applications for admission and scholarship funding will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until March 31,2005.

12. A Friend's Closet

Want to do something with your old PROM DRESS? Want to make someone's prom EXTRA SPECIAL? SEA, Student Education Association, is collecting dresses (all styles and sizes) and accessories to hold a Prom Boutique for Central High School. To make this event successful, please donate your CLEAN dresses by Friday, APRIL 8, 2005. 13. The AAO Toy Box 
Do you have any new/new looking stuffed animals you could part with? The Atheist Agnostic Organization will be continually collecting plush toys for the children at Carle Foundation Hospital. These toys bring great comfort to some very sick kids and are always very much loved and appreciated. If you have any items you would like to contribute drop them in the AAO Toy Box in Illini Room 277 (The Office of Volunteer Programs), or contact David F. Vondra, President AAO at vondra at uiuc.edu.
