1. A Service Showcase

Please come to the Service Showcase, which will be held on Wednesday, MARCH 9 (TOMORROW) from 10AM to 2PM in Illini Room C in the Illini Union. The Service Showcase will be a great opportunity to learn more about service organizations, participate in a service activity, meet others with an interest in volunteering, and win great prizes and get free goodies! Additionally, we will also be holding a food drive to donate to Salt & Light, so please help us out by bringing in some canned goods. All in all, it should be a great time! 2. C-U Express Festival

C-U Express Festival is the most inclusive festival ever to hit Champaign-Urbana! Little Theatre of the Deaf will present 3 performances completely in sign language and translated into spoken word. Big Fish will be shown on Friday night with closed captioning. This is an arts festival, but it's art with a twist! Volunteers are needed as ushers at each of the performances of Little Theatre of the Deaf and as carnival workers on Saturday. Performances are as follows: Friday, MARCH 18 at 9:30AM, 1:00PM, and 7:30PM and Saturday, MARCH 19 at 1:00PM. Carnival hours for Saturday are 11AM to 4PM. C-U Special Recreation would really appreciate your time and energy for this exciting event, if you are interested please contact Kathy Stiebner at 398-2374.



 

3. Ten Thousand Villages

Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit store in Downtown Champaign, is having an Oriental Rug Event, MARCH 9 - 12.  We need 8 to 10 people (strong backs) to unload 300 rugs of various sizes on Tuesday, MARCH 8, at 5 p.m. and help roll them out.  Then on Saturday, MARCH 12 at 6 p.m. we need help rolling up the rugs and loading them in a van. Each time will be about 2 hours or so. 4. Family Service Senior Resource Center: Meals on Wheels

The Family Service Senior Resource Center, who assist persons 60 years of age and over to maximize independence through personalized services and linkage to community resources in need of a Meals on Wheels Delivery Person. This person would provide hot nutritious meals to those who are not able to leave their homes or cook meals themselves. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license and auto insurance. Volunteers are not responsible for cooking meals; they will be prepared from the Illini Union and will just need delivering. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday, approximately 10:30AM - 12:30PM; schedules and time commitment are flexible. If you are interested in a great volunteering opportunity that helps to provide a gracious service to our community's seniors, then this might be for you! 5. Carrie Busey Elementary School Carnival

Carrie Busey Elementary School is in need of volunteers for the school's carnival. It is a night of great fun for our students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Our greatest need is for volunteers to run the various games (collect tickets, explain games, paint faces, and distribute prizes). The carnival is on Friday, MARCH 11, 2005 from 5 - 8PM at Carrie Busey Elementary School, 1605 W. Kirby Ave.; Champaign. Help bring smiles to young children's faces by participating in this fun activity! 6. Alternative Spring Break 

Each year, Alternative Spring Break organizes service trips during fall, winter, and spring breaks. On each trip, volunteers deal with a specific social, political, or environmental issue and gain experience and knowledge working with these issues. To help fund their upcoming spring break trip, ASB members need your help! Your attendance at the following fun-filled events will benefit this great service project:

7. SPSF & VEYA: Tutors/Mentors Needed!
Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity where you can help shape the 
youths of the future? The Single Parent Scholarship Foundation (SPSF) and Visionaries Educating Youths and Adults (VEYA) are seeking African American
female/male adult volunteers to tutor and mentor African American at-risk female/male youths. SPSF provides the tutoring mentoring services for the female youths. The program date and time for volunteering is Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:30pm to 7pm. VEYA provides the tutoring/mentoring services for the male youths on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5pm-7pm. 8. Volunteer Needed for LeaderShape 

LeaderShape is an organization committed to "leading with integrity that results in extraordinary change". 9. Habitat for Humanity's HOMEWORKS

Looking for a fun way to help out in the community?  How about volunteering at HOMEWORKS, Habitat for Humanity's home improvement resale store? HOMEWORKS is a home improvement resale store selling new and gently used furniture, household items, appliances, and building materials to the public at greatly discounted prices. The 9,000 sq. foot store opened in May 2003 and is almost completely volunteer run.  All proceeds go to fund local Habitat for Humanity home building projects.  Below are specific volunteer opportunities that we need to be filled.  We're open Tuesday thru Sunday, and could really use some extra help. 

 

Customer Service Volunteers: Volunteers are needed during store hours to help run the resale store, assist customers with questions, help accept drop-off donations, and help to price, clean and display new donations.  Volunteers needed Tues/Wed 12-7pm, Thurs/Fri/Sat 10am-5pm, and Sunday 1-5pm.


Pick-up and Delivery Drivers: HOMEWORKS is currently seeking volunteers on Wed. 3-7pm, Fri. 12-5pm, and Sat. 10am-5pm to help with merchandise deliveries and donation pick-ups in the Champaign-Urbana area.  Help out just one day, a handful of days, or serve as an on-call driver.

10. ICTM Volunteers 

The Mathematics Department is seeking volunteers for the ICTM (Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics) High School Math Contest to be held on the UIUC campus on Saturday, April 30, 2005. Over 2000 high school students from around the state will be there so an estimate of 200 volunteers are needed to proctor, grade, enter data, usher, time oral competitions and many others. Special qualifications are not needed for most of the jobs. Note that some volunteers are also needed on Sat. APRIL 2 and during the week before APRIL 30.

11. INSTITUTE ON PHILANTHROPY AND VOLUNTARY SERVICE 
Make a difference this summer by attending the Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service (IPVS)! This internship program is intended for students who are involved in volunteer activities and are excited about exploring professional opportunities in the non-profit sector.

 

IPVS is ideal for undergraduate student leaders who are engaged in service programs on and off their campuses. Upon acceptance, students are enrolled at Georgetown University and are placed in a nonprofit internship for eight weeks. Part of the Institute experience will include hands on activities such as planning service projects and organizing fundraising activities. The dates of the internship are from JUNE 4-JULY 30,2005. Applications for admission and scholarship funding will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until March 31,2005.

12. A Friend's Closet

Want to do something with your old PROM DRESS? Want to make someone's prom EXTRA SPECIAL? SEA, Student Education Association, is collecting dresses (all styles and sizes) and accessories to hold a Prom Boutique for Central High School. To make this event successful, please donate your CLEAN dresses by Friday, APRIL 8, 2005. 13. Basketball Clinic for Kids

Would like to pass on basic basketball skills to some local kids? White Heath Grade School is offering a basketball clinic to 1st through 4th grade boys and girls. There will be one-hour sessions from 9am to 3pm on the following Saturdays: March 12th, March 19th, April 2nd, and April 9th. You can volunteer to work whatever time or day you want.
