1.  OVP Make a Difference Drive

OVP's 2006 Make a Difference Drive starts on October 9th!  This drive collects everyday items that human service agencies in Champaign County, such as Crisis Nursery and the TIMES Center, need such as toiletries and kid-friendly foods!  If your RSO or you yourself would like to participate in this easy philanthropic activity please e-mail us at ovp at uiuc.edu!  

 

2.  KATRINA Summit

This FREE three-day summit that starts this Wednesday will unite the experience and expertise of artists, writers, community members, technologists, scientists, and others to inspire innovative approaches and solutions to the critical social issues Katrina revealed! Some of the sessions include:

 

Cajun Fais Do-Do CU Style

Wednesday, September 27th at the Virginia Theatre from 6:00-9:30 p.m.

A Fais Do-Do brings people together to socialize, eat, make music, and dance.  C-U's first includes spoken word performances and hip-hop from Primemeridian!

 

Race and the Class in the 'New' New Orleans Schools:  

Friday Sept. 29th at the NCSA Auditorium from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Issues of charter schools, community and social networks as they impact re-imagining education in New Orleans and Champaign-Urbana

 

Taking Action Through Volunteerism

Friday, Sept. 29th at the NCSA Atrium from 2:30-3:15 p.m.

Katrina Volunteers discuss their experiences and the value of volunteerism.

 

Holes in the Safety Net:  What Katrina Revealed About Social Justice

Friday Sept. 29th at the NCSA Auditorium from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

Champaign-Urbana community members discuss issues of social justice raised by Katrina.

 

3.  Late-Night Basketball

Share your love of basketball with the youth involved in the Mission 180 Programs!!  Volunteer for their Late-Night Basketball held on Fridays from 9:00-11:00 p.m. at the Douglas Center!!  Contact Jeff Hunt at jeff at mission180.com or at 217.352.3826!

 

4.  Kindergarten Calendars

Need a quick and easy volunteer project?  The United Way needs volunteers to affix labels on Kindergarten Calendars by Friday, September 29th!  Please contact Lynn Peisker of the United Way at Lynn at uwayhelps.org <mailto:Lynn at uwayhelps.org>  or 217.352.5151 as soon as possible!!

 

5.  Health and Graduate School Fair

Volunteer and get a FREE T-shirt!!  On October 18th and 19th, The Career Center will be hosting a "Health and Graduate School Fair" in the Illini Union Rooms A, B, C from 11am to 3pm.  Volunteers are needed to work various time slots from 9am until 4pm on both days.  Interested students should send their name, e-mail address, and time available to work to Michael Wiggers at wiggers at uiuc.edu <mailto:wiggers at uiuc.edu> .  Time slots are scheduled for each hour from 9am to 4pm.  For every hour a volunteer works he or she will get a raffle ticket to win $100, $50, or $25 at the Illini Union Bookstore!!!

                    

6.  Voter Registration Volunteers

Planned Parenthood is sponsoring a Voter Registration and Action network Recruitment campaign to help keep our advocates informed and to encourage them to get out and exercise their right to vote.  To join your fellow Planned Parenthood and Pro-Choice advocates in this opportunity, please RSVP on-line no later than Tuesday, September 26th. 7.  Urbana Park District

Interested in working outdoors?  Help out with the Urbana Park District!  Volunteers are needed on the following dates and times at the following parks:  

Sept 30th: 1-3 Meadowbrook

Oct 14th: 9-11 Busey, 1-3 Weaver

Oct. 28th: 9-11 Meadowbrook

Nov 11th: 9-11 Busey, 1-3 Weaver

Dec 9th: 9-11 Busey, 1-3 Weaver

Please pre-register by calling the nature center at 384-4062!

  

8.  Meals on Wheels Volunteers

Deliver meals to Senior Citizens by volunteering with Family Service Senior Resource Center!!  Meals are delivered to individuals living in Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy, Monday through Friday.  Call Stephanie Bean at (217) 352-5100 for more information!!

 

9.  C-U on the Trails with the Champaign Park District 

The Champaign Park District needs volunteers to help out with registration, trail management, and prize/refreshment table on Sep 30, 2006 from 7:00am-12:00 pm.  For more information please contact Katie Flint at katie.flint at cparkdistrict.com or

10.  5th Annual International Beer Tasting and Chili Cook-Off

Help out the Urbana Business Association this Saturday, September 30th from 10am-10pm by volunteering at the 5th Annual International Beer Tasting and Chili Cook-Off!!  Volunteers are needed for setup, clean-up, and helping out with concessions!  Contact Mary Dennis at mary at urbanabusiness.com or (217) 344-3872 form more information.
