1.  Teach for America

Teach For America's mission is to enlist our nation's most promising future leaders in the movement to eliminate educational inequality.  We accomplish this by building a highly selective national corps of outstanding recent college graduates-of all academic majors and career interests-who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools in our nation's lowest-income communities and become lifelong leaders for expanding educational opportunity. 2.  German Tutor

A student who is enrolled in an on-line GIS German 103 course needs some help and tutoring in the German language and with this particular course.  He has a moderate hearing loss, but can hear and speak to you well, one on one.  Contact bryanmc at uiuc.edu <mailto:bryanmc at uiuc.edu>  for more information!

 

3.  Alternative Spring Break

Need plans for fall or winter break? Enjoy helping people and doing community service?  Consider ASB! Trip issues range from environmental concerns to children with disabilities, and locations vary from New York to Los Angeles. Full trip descriptions and applications are available online. The deadline for Site Facilitator apps is Monday, September 18 by 3:00 p.m. and the deadline for general applicants is Friday, September 22. 4.  Catholic Charities

Sara Galliano is the volunteer coordinator for the Katrina Aid Today, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans and is looking for volunteers from your organization that would like to assist in any of the various positions available for the recovery process from hurricane Katrina.  We need translators, humanitarian service providers, counselors, case managers, gutting, rebuilding, clerical assistance and most importantly friendly faces for our clients.  Please call 504-310-6878.  Catholic Charities is able to provide housing for the building and gutting volunteers.

5.  Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is looking for volunteers to help us with voter registration in the Champaign-Urbana community on Saturday, September 30th.  They will be meeting at 9:30 at the Plumbers Union Hall in Savoy (1005 N. Dunlap) for a training session and lunch will also be provided for all volunteers.  From noon to 4:00 volunteers will be going out into the community to register people to vote and also to speak to the public about important issues. 6.  Head Start Early Childhood Programs

Head Start Early Childhood programs need gardens tended at two of their Champaign County locations:  809 N. Neil in Champaign, and 104 W. Nightingale in Rantoul

This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity for someone who enjoys being outside and working with flowers.  A volunteer is needed to tend each garden once a week to keep them looking beautiful throughout the rest of the fall season.  Interested?  Call Kelly Russell at 328-3313.

 

7.  Urbana Park District

Interested in working outdoors?  Help out with the Urbana Park District!  Volunteers are needed on the following dates and times at the following parks:  

Sept 30th: 1-3 Meadowbrook

Oct 14th: 9-11 Busey, 1-3 Weaver

Oct. 28th: 9-11 Meadowbrook

Nov 11th: 9-11 Busey, 1-3 Weaver

Dec 9th: 9-11 Busey, 1-3 Weaver

8.  Rape Crisis Services

1 in 3 women & 1 in 6 men will experience sexual violence before the age of 18. But you can help. Rape Crisis Services will be holding a fall training for crisis counselors and medical/legal advocates. Volunteers from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. 9.  C-U on the Trails with the Champaign Park District

10.  Make Learning Fun Fair

The Champaign Early Childhood center needs volunteers to show parents how to put together educational kits or games that they can do at home with their Pre-K child. They need 3-4 volunteers to man tables for 2 hour shifts all through the day from 9 AM -7 PM.  Dates and times include Nov 9, 2006 (10-12), Nov 9, 2006 (1-3), Nov 9, 2006 (3-5), Nov 9, 2006 (5-7).
