An all-volunteer organization, they mail books to Illinois prisons, and also supply and staff libraries at the Champaign County jails. UC Books to Prisoners accepts request letters from Illinois inmates, finds books that meet their needs and provides them at no cost to the inmates. We do this in part as a creative way to address the poor selection of books available in many prisons, to let prisoners know they not forgotten, to remind us that prisoners are part of our community, to encourage literacy, to share our enthusiasm for literature, and to educate ourselves and the public about life in prison.
