1.  INTERNATIONAL SERVICE EVENT

Interested in volunteering abroad?  Come listen to six registered student organizations (RSOs) talk about their experiences all over the world.  The event will take place on Wednesday, April 2nd at 7pm in Illini Room C.



2.  NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK

During National Volunteer Week you can:
-  Attend our kick-off event on Monday, April 14.  There will be speakers, a service t-shirt display, service RSOs, and you can stop by and make a craft to be donated to a local agency.
-  Participate in a service project.
-  Organize a collection drive (collect pop tabs, school supplies, cell phones, and toiletries).
-  Nominate an individual or group for the 2008 Outstanding Service Awards. (See #6 in this email!)

3.  PERFECT PROM PROJECT BOUTIQUE

Help out the Perfect Prom Project Sunday morning setting up the boutique and/or being a personal shopper for some high school girls! It's a ton of fun and we’d love your help!

We would love to have help from 8:00 am for setting up the event, and then at 10am we would love to have anyone stay as a personal shopper to carry dresses and shoes and chat with the high schoolers till whenever, the event ends at 3pm. There will be a dress code for the personal shoppers, however we haven't finalized that.  For now, plan on nice black with a touch of purple. It's going to be in Room 314 of the Union. 4.  BLOOD DRIVE

Thursday, April 3 @ 2:30 - 7:30 pm
Got Blood? (Wanna Share?)

Hillel Foundation will sponsor a Blood Drive on Thursday, April 3 from 2:30 - 7:30 pm at the Cohen Center for Jewish Life (503 East John Street, Champaign).   Sign up with Dana Shapiro (dana at illinihillel.org); walk-ins are welcomed!

Please eat within 4 hours prior, drink extra water and bring your ID.

FREE T-Shirt and after-donating-blood snacks for all donors!

5.  3 ON 3 CO-ED BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FOR CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK

NLVS and Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity 3 on 3 Co-Ed Basketball Tournament

Support The Children's Miracle Network and help fund health clinics and orphanages abroad!! $20/team... Includes tons of cool prizes for winning teams. 3 players/team with 1 substitute allowed. All male teams, all female teams, and co-ed teams accepted!!

6.  APPLY FOR THE OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARDS

*Two (2) awards will be given for outstanding *student organizations* engaged in service during the 2007-2008 academic year.

*Three (3) awards will be given for outstanding *individual students* actively involved in service during the 2007-2008 school year.

A nomination letter can be completed personally by the individual or group nominated or by another party on their behalf.  Each application requires two references and one must be related to service.  A nominator can also serve as a reference for a student or an organization.  Nomination forms are available online at http://www.union.uiuc.edu/ovp/nvw/


Award recipients will be honored with plaques commemorating their dedication to service.

The deadline to submit nominations is Friday April 11th at 12pm

7.  RELAY FOR LIFE

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Societies signature fundraiser.  Relay for Life is U of I's largest fundraiser, as we raised over $250,000 last year to fight cancer. Teams of 8-15 walk the U of I's Track from 7 pm - 7 am on April 18 to show that as cancer doesn't sleep, neither do we.  All are welcome for this fun night filled with entertainment, games and ways to fight back! 8.  HELP AT THE IL AFTERSCHOOL NETWORK 22ND ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The Illinois AfterSchool Network needs help to put on its 22nd Annual Conference.  They expect 300 participants at Hawthorne Suites, 101 Trade Centre Drive in Champaign.  You can help in the following ways:

FRIDAY April 18
5 volunteers Friday at Registration Desk
        3 of the 5 could facilitate sessions at 1:15pm
        All stay until 4:15pm

SATURDAY April 19
5 volunteers for Registration Desk
        7:30am to 11:00am

SATURDAY
10 volunteers to facilitate sessions
        9:15am to 4:00pm

Duties:
Register Conference Attendees
Collect Registration Money
Hand Out Conference Packets/Bags
Facilitate in Conference Sessions

Hours:
Friday -- 7:30am to 4:45pm
Saturday -- 9:15am to 4:00pm
Half day shifts preferred

9.  STRATTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CARNIVAL

If there are any groups out there who would like to help out with the school carnival at Stratton Elementary on April 25th, please contact Amy Sponsler (sponsler at uiuc.edu)



10.  CYCLING TO EMPOWER HOMELESS FAMILIES

We are in need of volunteers and/or sponsors for our fundraising event “Pedal Power”, Cycling to Empower Homeless Families which will be held on Sunday, May 4th at Hessel Park in Champaign.  We need volunteers to assist with registration, pass out information, greeters, rest stop volunteers, set-up and clean-up.  We also invite the students to participate in the event individually or as teams of four.   For more

11.  HEARTLAND HEALTHCARE SEARCHING FOR MUSICALLY-APT COMPANION

As the volunteer coordinator at Heartland Healthcare, I currently have a resident that used to compose music and play the base fiddle.  I am hoping to get in touch with a music group or an individual with similar musical interests, who could volunteer some time to play and talk with my resident.  Please let me know who would be a good contact for such a project or forward this on to that individual.

12.  MASSACHUSETTS PROMISE FELLOWSHIP WITH AMERICORPS

I’m writing to tell you about an excellent opportunity for graduating students! The Massachusetts Promise Fellowship is a statewide, youth development AmeriCorps program dedicated to providing a better future for children and youth in Massachusetts. Our 30 Fellows serve at non-profit organizations, schools, and city agencies across the state leading a variety of initiatives related to youth, including youth leadership development, mentoring, after-school enrichment, youth outreach and education, and volunteer recruitment and coordination.

During their year of service, our Fellows are highly supported and receive numerous trainings to enhance their personal and professional development. Through our partnership with Northeastern University, Fellows also have the opportunity to take FREE graduate-level courses with the University’s School for Professional & Continuing Studies.
