hey everyone,

i was busy with reconciling accounts (which needs to be done straight
through otherwise it gets really ugly) so i couldn't come to the meeting,
but i did listen in, and we talked about general fundraising stuff at the
finance meeting too.

i did want to say a few things about memberships in general at the meeting
and i'm sorry that things took too long for me to come over and talk with
y'all.

it's good to have annual members (those of us who pay a particular amount
per year, say $25 or $50), but what we really need right now are
SUSTAINING funders, who pay a particular amount on a monthly basis. i can
only think of 4 regular sustaining funders at this point -- folks who
contribute between $10-50 a month, every month. those people are the ones
who are bringing in, say, the money that pays our phone bill and
utilities. there aren't enough of them to make any kind of difference
other than that.

we talked at finance about how working groups should encourage their
members to recruit and funraise themselves. also, to lead by example by
becoming one of those sustaining funders. i know no one wants to pay $25 a
month, but at this point, that kind of thing REALLY needs to happen,
otherwise we're not going to be able to pay the rent.

i think getting the general and staffing orientations is really important,
but this needs to go along with it. we need to be encouraging people to
become sustaining funders, rather than annual members.

the general attitude about fundraising is that it's important, but it's
important for OTHER people to do it. no one seems to want to step up to
the plate.

anyway, that's just my pessimistic take on things tonight, after looking
through the accounts to see where we're at.

feel free to give feedback or brainstorm, but i thought you guys would
probably be one of the better places to bring this up.

g'night,
