Friends,

Iowans for Peace with Iraq of Iowa City are offering a rare chance to
meet and hear Robert Fisk of the London Independent. Please
disseminate this urgent press release in the Champaign-Urbana area.
We have delayed this announcement because Fisk is expecting to be
despatched to Afghanistan at any moment. Note that this means
eleventh-hour cancellation of these appearances is POSSIBLE. We have
been in contact with him, however, and chances seem good that he can
come. But please use the contact information in the press release to
check with us BEFORE you make the drive. I estimate about a five
hour drive from Champaign-Urbana to IC, which is one hour west of the
Quad Cities on I-80 (highway exits direct you to campus). All events
but one are on the east-side campus of the Univ. of Iowa in downtown
IC, and directions to the individual venues are easy to get from
anywhere in the center of campus.

MIDDLE EAST EDUCATION WEEK TO START OCTOBER FIRST IN IOWA CITY

For Immediate Release

Contact: (Quinn, Yelena, Monica, Franklin, Mike, Darrell)

In the wake of the immense tragedy of the suicide attacks on civilian
workers in New York and military personnel in Washington, many Americans
are striving to understand what drives some people to carry out such
atrocities, sacrificing their own lives in the process. What has caused
such desperation, fury, and hatred? What are these people hoping to
achieve? Here is a chance to find out. A world renowned journalist, who
has personally interviewed the suspected mastermind of several terrorist
attacks on America, Osama bin Laden, will be keynote speaker during the
Middle East Education Week (October 1 through October 5) coordinated by
University of Iowa student organizations. Robert Fisk, an award-winning
British journalist known for his coverage of the Middle East and other hot
spots around the world, will give a public lecture on Tuesday, October 2,
at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union. The topic of
the lecture is "Reporting the Middle East: Israel, Palestine, and Iraq --
How to Tell a Fanatic from a Terrorist."

In another public appearance, Fisk will read from his highly acclaimed
book, "Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War," at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
October 3, at the Iowa City Public Library, Room A. In this book, Fisk
details his eyewitness account of the immediate aftermath of the attacks
on the Marine barracks and American Embassy in Beirut in 1983, which
killed over 300 people.

Also on Wednesday, October 3, residents of Iowa and Illinois may listen to
Fisk and phone in their questions when he is the guest of Iowa Talks, a
live call-in show on WSUI AM 910, from 10 to 11 a.m. To ask questions call
466-9100 in Iowa City/Coralville and 1-866-780-9100 toll-free in Iowa and
Illinois.

Other events of this week include a lecture panel in Shambaugh Auditorium
on Monday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. The panel will focus on international
laws guiding human rights principles as applied in the Middle East.
Panelists include Bruce Nestor, National Lawyers Guild President and Iowa
City activist; Marcella David, Professor at the UI School of Law, who has
studied the impact of economic sanctions on Iraq; and Jennifer
Loewenstein, an American Jewish human rights activist from Madison,
Wisconsin, who lived in Israel and made several trips to Lebanon to
volunteer as an English teacher in a Palestinian refugee camp. The panel
will be moderated by the UI Center for Human Rights, represented by Rex
Honey, UI Professor of Geography, Chair of the Global Studies Program, and
UICHR Associate Director.

The Middle East Education Week has been coordinated by student
organizations -- Iowans for Peace with Iraq, The General Union of
Palestinian Students and the Iowa International Socialist Organization as
well as by Iowa City and Coralville community members. The program was
funded by the University of Iowa Student Government, UI School of
Journalism and Mass Communications, UI Global Studies Program, UI Center
for Human Rights, and Iowa City Foreign Relations Council. The UI Lecture
Committee has organized the Tuesday lecture with Robert Fisk. The reading
on Wednesday is cosponsored by the Iowa City Human Rights Commission. A
list of events is attached. For more details please go to
http://www.uiowa.edu/~ipiraq/meew or e-mail ipi at uiowa.edu. A copy of Mr.
Fisk's book -- Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War -- will be made available
