The Season of Giving Local

University Y encourages residents to celebrate #GivingTuesday

What: The University YMCA announces the celebration of #GivingTuesday in Champaign-Urbana.
Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping
season, #GivingTuesday will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve
their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and
causes they support and help create a better world. Taking place December 3, 2013
- the Tuesday after Thanksgiving - #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social
media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar
to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become synonymous with holiday shopping.

How: On Tuesday, December 3, the University YMCA will kick-off a social media campaign
to celebrate #GivingTuesday in Champaign-Urbana. We will ask citizens to make a
pledge; whether it's pledging to volunteer an hour a week, to make a philanthropic
commitment locally, or to encourage local government, institutions and organizations
to partner in the #GivingTuesday movement. The University Y wants to promote the
creativity of the community to give back.

When: Tuesday, December 3, 2013

TIME IS MONEY: Non-profit and charity organizations that serve Champaign-Urbana
connect people to local causes and build healthier, happier communities. Student
leaders at the University Y give a lot of valuable time to the 19 local, national,
and international communities they currently serve. Last year, the University Y's
12 student programs made up 752 students volunteers of whom engaged in projects
centered the Y's work in social justice, interfaith advocacy, environmental protection
and global engagement issues.

Y student volunteers gave a total of 19,504 hours of their time. The value of volunteer
time on the Federal level last year was $22.13 per volunteer hour. Calculating that
value with the total number of student hours, means that students gave a total of
$431,623.52 of in-kind services last year. Some of their many community projects
included mentoring in Champaign County schools, coordinating 22 community service
trips, initiating a new bridge project in Cameroon, strengthening interfaith relationships
on campus, and more. (For more details, please see the 2012-2013 student programming
at a glance.jpg in the media kit.)

"The University Y wants to promote the holiday season as a time to give to your
passion. Whether it's giving more volunteer time to a cause you're passionate about
or donating to an organization you care about we hope to inspire our community to
be a positive force of change. " says Alicia Beck, Development Director of the University
Y.

About #GivingTuesday:

#GivingTuesday is a movement to celebrate and provide incentives to give. It will
culminate with a global day of giving on December 3, 2013. This effort harnesses
the collective power of a unique blend of partners- charities, families, businesses
and individuals-to transform how people think about, talk about and participate
in the giving season.

A team of recognized experts and influencers, initially convened by leaders of 92nd
Street Y and supported by a core group of founding partners, originally spearheaded
this effort. Founding partners in 2012 included United Nations Foundation, DonorsChoose.org,
Mashable, Blackbaud, charity: water, GlobalGiving, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans
of America (IAVA), Kiva, Darden Restaurant Group, Groupon, Unilever and VentureThree
Capital. Leaders in philanthropy, social media, innovative giving, grassroots organizing,
marketing and communications are providing

counsel and resources to help build this movement.

"#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because
it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community
and not just consumerism," said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. "The most
meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the
commitment to work together to help build a better world."
