FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Urbana, IL-

James Singleton and Helen Gillet (of Astral Project fame), will be coming to Buvon's Wine Bar, 203 N. Vine St, Urbana, Monday September 30th. They will play a duo performance. Admission is $15 - finger food and cake will be provided.

Helen Gillet is a world-renowned musical improviser currently living in New Orleans, where she has studied and performed with members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Astral Project, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mardi Gras Indians, and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

Michael Domenici, one time radio host on WWOZ, New Orleans, called Gillet, " one of the most creative musicians currently on the scene in New Orleans." WWOZ host Mark LaMaire, agrees. Writing about Gillet he noted that her musicianship is "always so tasteful: at times atmospheric, other times serving the function of a bass player with metronomic rhythm and clear harmonic leadership".

Gillet tours across the United States and Western Europe. Her live solo performances include an acoustic cello, looped electronics, vocals, a vintage E.V.I. trumpet (Electronic Valve Instrument), and anything else she can reach around her to play. http://www.helengillet.com/

James Singleton is a composer, bassist, band leader and multi-instrumentalist who made his home in New Orleans since 1977. Since then he has freelanced with many great New Orleans artists. A short list would include: Professor Longhair, Astral Project, James Black, Aaron Neville, Milt Jackson, Eddie Harris, Lightnin' Hopkins, Gatemouth Brown, John Scofield, Ellis, Branford, Wynton, and Jason Marsalis, Wild Magnolias, Natalie Cole, Charlie Rich, and Harry Connick Jr.

As a member of Astral Project, Singleton's improvisation and depth caused Jonathan Tabak, writer for Offbeat Magazine to note, "not only is he one of the few bassists who can play convincing funk on the upright, his solos and compositions consistently push the envelop."

He continues to perform in a duo with cellist Helen Gillet, and constantly finds new outlets for collaborative efforts.

Gillet and Singleton will release their latest album, "Ferdinand," in September 2013. http://www.jamessingletonmusic.com/
