Subject: (SMARTalk)Election results summary - Victories for smokefree
air!

Good Morning,

Some good news. Unofficial results show overwhelming victories for
smokefree air across the country. Congratulations to all who worked on
these smokefree ballot campaigns. As the people who worked their
fingers to the bone during these campaigns tell us, these are not easy
fights to win. The opposition placed a number of challenges on the
ballot in a number of cities this year. Smokefree advocates answered the
call and fought back with vigor. We will no doubt learn many lessons
from these local campaign leaders in the coming weeks. For now we'll let
them get some much needed rest. Congratulations, and thank you for your
dedication to smokefree air!

Columbus, OH
Voters upheld smokefree ordinance passed by Council.

Lincoln. (as of 2am)

Fargo, ND
Residents could vote "yes" or "no" on one or all three of the proposed
versions, which is why multiple measures could receive a majority.
Initiated Ordinance No. 2 (ordinance excluding truck stops and enclosed
bar areas won with 22,666 votes, Ordinance No. 3 (health advocates
version), which would make all workplaces smokefree followed closely
with 22,049 votes total. Since both versions passed with over 50%, we
believe that the strongest ordinance, in this case #3, should go into
effect. The coalition is expected to challenge this if necessary.

Initiated ordinance No. 1 lost 45% to 55%
Initiated Ordinance No. 2 passed 22,666 (version with exemptions)
Ordinance No. 3 passed 22,049 (100% version) Win!

West Fargo, ND
Residents could vote "yes" or "no" on one or both of the proposed
versions, which is why multiple measures could receive a majority.
Similar to Fargo, Initiated Ordinance No. 1 (ordinance excluding truck
stops and bars/restaurants with class A or AB liquor licenses) passed
with 5,131 while Ordinance No. 2 (health advocates version), which would
make all workplaces smokefree followed closely with 4,692 votes total.
As in Fargo, since both versions passed with over 50%, we believe that
the strongest ordinance passing with over 50%, in this case #2, should
stand.

Initiated Ordinance No. 1 passed 5,131 (version with exemptions)
Ordinance No. 2 passed 4,692 (100% version) Win!

Duluth, MN (97% reporting) projected loss, in an attempt to strengthen
Duluth's smoking ordinance
Yes 46.4
No 53.6

*We are still awaiting ballot results from Laramie, WY.
**Tobacco tax initiatives also passed in Montana and Colorado.
Congratulations!
