Carl,

>From my perspective, you hastily sent the mailing list a question that
you ought to have taken to the manual pages, instead. The way you framed
your question, your purpose was not clear ("a container file in which
to install NetBSD for UML"), but the venting ("Spent all day on this",
"... being obstreperous ...") and trolling ("Is this what it's always
like to work on BSD?") were clear.

The manual pages for vnconfig and mdconfig are at
<http://netbsd.gw.com/cgi-bin/man-cgi?++NetBSD-current>.  Without having
seen the NetBSD Live CD, I am guessing that it contains the same pages.
I believe most users find them quite satisfactory. They seem to contain
different examples than what you typed. Were you reading the manual
pages for the right system?

Pay close attention to what the programs tell you. In your previous
e-mail, mdconfig printed a helpful message---sometimes I overlook messages
just like this after I get all bleary-eyed or frustrated from hacking
all day:

usage: mdconfig <device> <512-byte-blocks>

It sounds to me like you are trying to run NetBSD inside of a "virtual"
Linux. I did not think User Mode Linux operated at a level low enough
to host a different operating system. A virtualizer like Bochs, VMWare,
or Xen might be more appropriate. If you explain what you want to do at
a little higher level than "run NetBSD in UML," but a lower level than
"aligning your routing and DNS with ours," then maybe I can give you
some pointers.

Hope this helps.

Dave
