news group notes 7/22/01

sascha, sarah

Proposal for Newsgroup name change:
--to reflect the specialization developing between
News group and Print group, it was set forth to rename
the News group to Radio Broadcast group, pending
objections from group members by next week’s meeting
(more below)

--new business:
-Danielle has created Brain Book for group with
newshour templates; sample script for Free-Speech
Radio News (what FSRN wants), with FSRN contacts;
sample headlines; a piece from Grassroots Radio Conf
on how to put together 30 minute documentary piece;
and other reference materials; anyone can add to the
binder, placed along with the other binders near
computer

-Open invitation by Prometheus Radio Project for
“Regional Radio Barn Raisings”, workshop on how to put
together a low power FM radio station

-Update on Grassroots Radio Conf.: Amy Goodman, host
of Democracy Now on WEFT may be visiting C-U to help
with fundraiser; also possible Judy Gorman, singer,
songwriter

-danielle suggest thinking of the skills we need to
acquire & co-ordinating visits from speakers and
guests (like Amy Goodman) to educate

-more wanted for FSRN; nationally syndicated programs
like Democracy Now make call for IMCs to proffer local
story ideas for national broadcast; can do so for DN
by emailing: mail at democracynow.net

-collection of recordings from Grassroots Radio Conf
available at IMC, offered for self-instruction on
variety of topics; copies available at WEFT as well

--old business:
-this week’s newshour on Latino migrant workers
produced by Pauline, Brent, & Maria

-looking for headlines for this week’s show if someone
has one or more to contribute; contact Pauline, Brent,
or Maria

-can find materials for short piece on RTS action in
Naperville?

-30 July newshour, produced by Sascha and Sarah on
social issues in Brazil based on their travel there;
commentary on G8 between Paul R., Sarah, and Ben

-Sarah calls for volunteers to help sort through audio
recordings from Brazil to track interesting clips to
be used for program; please contact her if you can
help
-looking for headlines for 30 July
-Brent mentions that the newshours are seeking more
PSAs; Paul R. doing one on Highdive benefit?

--Communication between newsgroup, radio news, and
print news discussed; renaming of News group:

-would like to pool resources, perhaps have a story
board in front room with stories being produced, those
working on stories, their contact information, and for
what medium being produced for. volunteers?

-discussion moves to renaming News group to better
define its functions; agreement that already the
specialization has left News group meetings discussing
mainly the radio broadcasts

-having a liaison between Radio Broadcast group and
Print?

-Sascha mentions that members of the Steering
Committee need to report back to working groups common
interest/stories pursued by other groups

-3 September scheduled as the last IMC-produced
newshour; then what? put in request for show slot?

-thought that perhaps group better without weekly task
of Newshour; could devote time to producing shorter
pieces for national syndication that’d generate money
for the IMC as well

-concern that participation would suffer if pieces
weren’t guaranteed to be taken up by national programs

-sascha reaffirms (as danielle said at beginning of
meeting) that many outlets are asking UC-IMC for
produced pieces and ideas
-will yet have Life in the Bike Lane

-agreed to rename News group to Radio Broadcast group
(Radio group?) pending objections from group members
by next week’s meeting; proposal follows a need to
re-evaluate the scope of the News group, as it has
progressed to focus on audio broadcasts almost
exclusively

-possibility of beginning a Video group? interested
volunteers asked for

meeting ends 2.45pm
