Edition: #21-03
Satellite Uplink: May 21, 2003
Title: "Oil Slick: Bechtel, Halliburton, and the White House"
Status: PRODUCED
Description: The Bechtel Corporation landed a $680 million dollar
contract to rebuild Iraq after the U.S. invasion. Halliburton has been
operating there under a multi-billion dollar contract that appears to
give Vice President Dick Cheney's former company substantial control
over Iraqi oil. Back in the 1980s current Bush administration officials
were maneurvering to profit from Iraq's oil wealth, but there were some
setbacks. Is it payback time? On this edition of Making Contact, we
look at a controversial pipeline deal that now-Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld personally negoiated with Saddam Hussein on behalf of
the Bechtel Corporation when Ronald Reagan was in the White House. We
also examine Halliburton's $7 billion dollar oil contract in Iraq.

Edition: #22-03
Satellite Uplink: May 28, 2003
Title: "Stand-Off in South Asia: The India/Pakistan Conflict"
Status: PRODUCED
Description: Pakistan has been a vital ally for the United States in
what's often called the "War on Terrorism." But the relationship is not
without serious complications. Many members of Al-Qaeda have fled to
Pakistan since the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan in Autumn 2001. Pakistan
and India -- both armed with nuclear weapons -- remain in a decades-old
stand-off over the disputed territory of Kashmir. And, India accuses
Pakistan of "exporting terrorism." There's hope that the United States
can play a constructive role in resolving tensions between the two South
Asian countries, which have fought three wars since 1947. But the U.S.
role is entangled with international politics and the U.S. occupation of
Iraq. On this edition of Making Contact we take a look at India,
Pakistan, and challenges ahead in South Asia.

killed by an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer driver on May 16, 2003, in
Rafah. Making Contact's Rosalyn Fay reports on some of the viewpoints

state of our consitutional rights.

at the vital roles that radio has played in mobilizing communities:
Correspondent Alun Griffiths reports on Free Radio France.
Correspondent Joshua Welsh reports on KILI radio on the Pine Ridge

Title: [International Activism and Culture Clashes]
Status: ACCEPTING PITCHES
----->>>>> Script Deadline: July 2, 2003
----->>>>> Final Mix: July 3, 2003
Description: Can international activism have unintended results if
cultural norms aren't carefully evaluated when launching a campaign?
And, what can activists learn from other cultures when considering new
campaigns? On this edition of Making Contact we ask these questions,
and look at specific examples. Making Contact's Aimee Pomerleau looks
at a human rights campaign in Nigeria. We also examine the
effectiveness of Internet campaigns in South Korea and lessons that
activists in North America can draw from.
Mail CDs: July 7, 2003
note: We are looking for specific examples of Culture Clashes and
International Activism. We need one more segment.

Satellite Uplink: July 23, 2003
Title: [Africa and Corporate Interests]
Status: ASSIGNED OUT
----->>>>> Script Deadline: July 9, 2003
----->>>>> Final Mix: July 10, 2003
Description: How have corporate interests affected the level of violence
in conflicts in African nations? The African continent is rich in
natural resources, but how has the exploitation of those resources,
largely by multinational corporations, affected the lives of African
people. On this edition of Making Contact, we explore these questions.
Correspondent Lindsay Benedict looks at the conflict in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo and the role of resource extraction. Making
Contact's Rosalyn Fay looks at alleged human rights violations at a gold
mine in Tanzania, which is owned by a Canadian corporation that had
hired former President George Bush Sr. after he left the White House.

Title: "Preparation of Church and State: The Christian Right and Public
Policy"
Status: ACCEPTING PITCHES
----->>>>> Script Deadline: July 16, 2003
----->>>>> Final Mix: July 17, 2003
Description: In many ways the constitutionally mandated separation
between church and state has been faltering. President Bush has pushed
numerous faith-based initiatives and has paved the way for religious
organizations to receive federal funding. But the agenda goes much
further. Many Christian Right leaders have said that they've
essentially won the White House with Bush in office. What are some of
the political, social , and cultural implications?
Mail CDs: July 21, 2003
Note: We're looking for story ideas on these topics.

----->>>>> Script Deadline: July 23, 2003
----->>>>> Final Mix: July 24, 2003
Description: After World War II countries around the world agreed upon
the rules of war, otherwise known as International Humanitarian Law.
This fundamental body of law is meant to ease the suffering of
non-combatants, provide rules of engagement, establish guidelines for
handling prisoners of war, and set forth obligations for occupying
forces, among other legal areas that define the parameters of war. How
does International Humanitarian Law apply as the U.S. wages its war on
terrorism? What are the U.S. obligations as the occupier of Iraq? On
this edition of Making Contact, we explore these and other questions.
This show will feature voices from the American Red Cross annual seminar
on International Humanitarian Law.

know the long-term effects on human health. The U.S. government
registers about 2000 newly synthesized chemicals each year, adding to
the tens of thousands of chemicals that are already in use. What's in
our food, our cosmetics, our clothing, air, water, land? And how are we
affected? On this edition of Making Contact we take a look at these
questions. Making Contact's Aimee Pomerleau looks at a study by the
Environmental Working Group that randomly selected 9 adult Americans and

Edition: #36-03
Title: [The FCC, Free Speech, and Media Consolidation]
Status: ACCEPTING PITCHES
Satellite Uplink: September 3, 2003
----->>>>> Script Deadline: August 20, 2003
----->>>>> Final Mix: August 21, 2003
Description: In the Summer of 2003, the FCC is scheduled to considere
rule changes that would allow corporations to increase media holdings in
market areas, which would further increase the concentration of
ownership that controls a majority of our news and information, and
dominants the agenda-setting television and radio networks, and the
major newspapers. This is happening at a time when access to
information is crucial as the U.S. government wages its war on
terrorism...with implications abroad and at home. At the same time,
many journalists have lost their jobs for raising critical questions
about U.S. policy, or speaking out against the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
What is the state of media? How have journalists been silenced? What
are the implications for democracy? On this edition of Making Contact
we address these and other questions. Correspondent Cerissa Tanner
reports on the firing of San Francisco Chronicle writer Henry Norr, who
participated in anti-war demonstrations. She also speaks with poet
Sarah Jones, whose poem "My Revolution" was banned by the FCC.

----->>>>> Final Mix: August 28, 2003
Description: A host of development projects aimed at increasing tourism
have cropped up around the world. These projects are billed as
catalysts for economic development, and ways that a country's natural
environment can be both enjoyed and preserved. But what's the track
record of these projects? And, exactly how necessary are these projects
for economic livelihood?
Mail CDs: September 1, 2003
Note: We are looking for a couple stories that are "on-location."

Edition: #38-03

Status: ACCEPTING PITCHES
----->>>>> Script Deadline: September 3, 2003
----->>>>> Final Mix: September 4, 2003

we look at these questions. Correspondent Ellen Horne looks at shrimp
populations.
Mail CDs: September 8, 2003
Note: We are looking for one more segment.
