perhaps the banner could expand in the middle, i.e. split the banner
into two images in the black between the photo and the indymedia.us,
and fill that with black.  that would keep the balance of visual
elements at the top adjusted.

also....whoever has the original files for the banner....  we'll need
a version with a spanish translation of the text within the image....
