IMC WEB (special on arts website) 2-5-03; 7:00 PM

Present: Mike L., Bob P., Paul R. (recording), Jason, Gerald B.

The main topic of the meeting is the proposed Arts site.

Mike reports that there have been suggestions to have an arts-related site
as another U-C IMC site. Bob relays comments sent in by Joe F., who ran
Newspoetry.com: concerns and precautions regarding moderation, to help
ensure diversity and critique (both positive and negative) -- mostly with
regard to using the site to publish arts. This would be in addition to
the arts site that publishes news about arts.

Mike notes that Clint has said it would be relatively easy to set up a
site where posting is subscription only.

Bob says that editing such a site may be a lot of work, though Mike says
subscriptions might cut that back. Mike says that Jason P-W, who initiated
the arts site, seemed OK with

Paul says he really doesn't care much about an arts wire either way --
thinks if people want to put it together they should do so, but maybe not
in the web group. Mike says how it links to the front page and how
content might be syndicated is of relevance to the web group. Paul says
that may be putting the cart in front of the horse for the web group--we
can worry about this once we actually have a site.

Sascha lists a bunch of people who want to work on it, but most of them
aren't here. Paul thinks that they should meet separately from web, just
because they've been primarily focused on the main news site.

Sascha says an arts page would simply and combine the separate pages we
maintain for shows and the gallery.

Mike says that the main concern of web is whether its OK for the arts site
to be not open publishing. Sascha doesn't think it would be, neither does
Paul, who is nonetheless interested to hear what the various arguments
are.

General consensus that it's OK for the group interested in developing an
arts site should do so, provided it's open like all IMC meetings and only
IMC members are empowered to edit/maintain the site.

Next regular web meeting is next Wed. Feb.
