An April Poem-A-Day Keeps The Brain Cobwebs Away

If you didn't know, April is officially National Poetry Month. In support
of this oft forgotten corner of the publishing world, Knopf is sponsoring
a "Poem-A-Day" e-mail campaign to raise poetry awareness.

This is the third consecutive year Knopf has run the program, delivering
all interested parties a dose of well-crafted language to go with their
morning coffee (or tea or Chai). 9,000 people signed up for the daily
e-mails last year and the company is hoping to add significantly to their
number with this year's campaign.

Deborah Garrison, Knopf's poetry editor, told PW Daily, "There's been kind
of a surge in the interest in poetry and we're just enjoying it." She
added, "It's quite exciting to reach people in their home and offices.
When you get used to reading poem a day by e-mail--whether you're at
home, work or wherever--it becomes part of your diet."

Knopf has also launched a dedicated James Merrill multimedia site to
coincide with the publication of his Collected Poems. Among the unique
features are video footage of Merrill reading and a tour of his house in
Stonington Conn., narrated by poet and editor J. D. McClatchy.

To sign up to receive a poem-a-day during National Poetry Month, log on to
