[Newspoetry] Humanize This (a blank verse sonnet)

The kamikaze plane blew off my shoes.
The steel beams up the center all gave way.
The shrapnel struck the cameraman below.
A few of us remember ninety-three.
We knew to grab our purses as we fled.
--A gorgeous day to stroll the Brooklyn Bridge.
TriBeCa craned their necks in disbelief.
The orange of the explosion made A-1.

--The ones who dove head-first from up above...
The gaunt survivors sobbing on T. V.
The live feeds, zooming in on body parts.
The office papers swirling in the wind.
Now, Jersey City stinks of burning flesh.

...In Baghdad, there are no skyscrapers left.
