	Ape Sonnet

Five days ago, we were beneath the sky
among the smell of leaves and friends: at home.
The water tasted just as water should.

Now, we are told that, seated, upright, thus,
we prove ourselves "a credit to our race."

Their water has a faintly poisoned scent.
The mealy fruit they serve is three days old,
at least, and comes from trees we've never known.

With luck, they will not force us to wear clothes.
