December 18, 2005 | Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday defended President Bush's decision to secretly authorize the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans without seeking warrants, saying the program was carefully controlled and necessary to close gaps in the nation's counterterrorism efforts.

<<A TruthOut>>

What Gap?

Gaps were a Cold War fuss:
there was always a gap
which meant no cap
could be placed on us.

The Bomber Gap was big,
so huge as defy reason,
and we feared treason
would land us in the brig.

The Missile Gap was bigger,
for they might out kill
just for the thrill
all of us, fingering a trigger.

Gaps stuffed with terror
were meant to close
and lead us by the nose
in the ways of an error.

Gaps and gulfs,
aporias open
deconstruct sin,
mimicry of crying wolfs!
