[Peace-discuss] Food truck and what is needed

I've been told by Carol that they are mostly looking for food since there is
so little to eat there. Toiletries would also be helpful.

I've been given no other specifics about what types of food but here is what
I think would be most helpful: water, bottled sauces for pasta (or mixes IF
there is usable water), cans of soup, canned veggies, canned fruit, a few
cans of ground coffee, canned anything. The food needs to be
non-perishable; the truck will get hot inside. I also think donations of
can openers, disposable plates and cups, and things to cook in would also be
good.

Toiletries: I'm thinking that things such as shampoo, soap, baby wipes,
diapers, toilet paper would also be in short supply there. If you have
other usable items for people who have lost everything, now is a good time
to donate.

LOCATION FOR DROP-OFFS:
The truck is parked in the parking lot of the former Kay's Merchandise store
on MATTIS AVENUE in Champaign, just NORTH OF BRADLEY AVENUE. This lot now
belongs to the Illinois Employment Training Center (or similar name).

TIMES FOR DROP-OFFS:
Here are the times that there will be someone there to accept donations:
TUESDAY, Sept. 13, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm AND 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 14, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm AND 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
THURSADAY, Sept. 15, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm AND 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

More times might be offered but I know these are for certain. If you are
interested in helping load the truck (more people are needed on the 11 -2
shift if we get good turn-out, possibly more on the later shift), volunteers
will be gratefully accepted. If you can make more drop-off times available
by staffing the drop-off location, please call Carol at 344-1811 or call me
(Joan) at 369-2853 and I can give you the info I have.

I'd like to say that I think Carol and Aaron have been working very hard on
this effort and getting very little sleep. It's impossible for just two
people to think of contacting everyone who would be able to help. The
important thing is to get the word out now to as many people as possible so
that everyone has the chance to help.

Re: media. I'll be hand-delivering info to the NG and DI. Carol is getting
the info to radio stations but if you have inside contacts at any radio
station or media outlet, PLEASE get them my earlier note AND the PSA that
was attached to it.

Peace,
Joan

I agree with Molly and Karen. There should have been someone
presenting this to the AWARE membership last night. I ran
by the truck yesterday to make a donation but there was no
one there and no sign indicating when there would be. There
are plenty of people in town who would be pleased to help
fill the truck up, but little effort seems to be going into
getting the word out. Sandra's email was my first indication
that donations were still being accepted. But when and where?
And what is needed?

Bob
