As long as everyone is OK with calling readers "stupid", I'd have to say 
"It's the corporations, stupid!"  I personally think that America's economy 
and infrastructure are in a shambles because of things like NAFTA and our 
tax structure, which favor the corporations and those who own and control 
them.  In terms of the economy, I think we NEED war to keep the 
corporations profitable and happy, but I don't think the plight of the 
average citizen would be much different if we were "at peace" (which 
America almost never is).
