Absolutely correct except
I would suggest this modification ---

... the linchpin is the "political class",
  who've thrown in their lot with the fraction of 1% of the population 
who own the country --
/altho' their interest as a group is to lie to the 80% and keep the 20% 
engaged in circuses./"
