[Peace-discuss] no green light?

As I said, I agree with you, Mort. I also noted a lot of rah rah military stuff from both Obama and his wife -- and you and I have already agreed that the only troops we support is those who are refusing to serve. No, it definitely isn't perfect. But I take it as a good sign that he not only mentioned muslims, but that he mentioned them BEORE he mentioned jews. I'm cynical, tho' hopeful that things (war and peace in general and in ME in particular) will be better, maybe even better than I dare to hope.

I'm not about to argue with you Jennifer. You can find hope in the speech, no doubt, but I'm looking for policies and actions. Having seen (in the Financial Times of all places) an incredibly moving pathetic photo of a Palestinian child' s face with a tear in her eye, against a background of utter destruction, I wanted more, much more.

Agree with you, Mort... but I heard some reassuring things, too: Obama also said (in this order) "Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus... and non-believers..."  Pretty much described the country as in the crapper, thanks to Bush (implied) whom he thanked (but did NOT praise) for his service to country... Mentioned the MANY things to be fixed, ie  reinstatement of science, schools, oversight of financial institutions. A little unnerving to hear him say he'd get rid of gov't programs that don't work (need to keep an eye out there)...

Best of all, he never repeated Hillary's "Smart Power," which sounds like slogan from a Tide commercial, and which I hope I never, ever, ever hear again...

To me the speech was a hodgepodge of inconsistencies. On the one hand Obama
spoke of peace and understanding and tolerance--although I didn't hear the
word "justice". On the other he spoke of our nasty enemies and the
wars we are in, that had to be won. Every time I heard that, I bristled, and
still am. As if he didn't understand what has been largely instrumental in
the wars we are in, and have caused, our imperial efforts in the world.
