They may have fled thinking that they had run out of arguments,
and that discretion was the better part of valor.

There was an encounter a bit like this at the Quad Day ISO table with
an apologist for Israel.  ("Why concentrate on small problems when
you could be worrying about Darfur?" for example.)
The apologist looked disgusted and hurried off when he got
arguments in reply -- including US extravagant military support
for Israel -- which I suspect he had no answer to.
