"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dear CCR Supporter:
As we celebrate Dr. King's wisdom that continues to ring true years after his legacy began, the Center would like to affirm the right to a standard of living adequate for one's health and well-being, a right that is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. CCR challenged the Hyde Amendment over three decades ago in the landmark abortion rights case Harris v. McRae for its gravely disparate impact on the health of poor women by denying them a medical procedure that 1 in 3 women will undergo. This week also marks the thirty-seventh anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the milestone case that legalized the right for women to control their own reproduction.
Decades later, Congress is considering a proposal to reform the nation's healthcare system that includes dangerous restrictions to a women's right to choose. Call 202-559-1164 to tell your member of Congress that the Stupak amendment is outrageous and unacceptable.
Join CCR, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and over forty other groups, including the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR), to ensure that the right to choose is not restricted in any final national health care legislation. The national debate on health care reform must not be used as an excuse for right wing extremist to roll back abortion rights.
Thank you for standing in the fight for reproductive justice for all women.
Sincerely,
Annette Dickerson
Director of Education and Outreach
