I rather think they will back off and let him go.

I suppose that Edward Scissorhands is cool in HK for awhile.

Where he goes from there is quite some question.

He can't stay in HK more than 60 days maybe 90 legally without a reason.

He will have to renew his visa sooner or later, then they can
just retain him quietly.

He can't easily get into China.  There is nothing for China
to gain from helping him.

It will look bad for the US to go after him in HK, rather
authoritarian and anti-democratic, and the US will get some
bad press for it.

Interesting it is that if he was fleeing the Chinese Government he
would be a hero in the West.

Still, there are a lot of people in HK who would be
willing to lend him a hand and a lot of remote places there
for him to hide out and write his story.

Very few sympathetic countries for him to approach.
