J.N. Irvin told me about 30 years ago that it was so hot in 1936 that it was
too hot to sleep in the house (there was no electricity in southern 
Illinois,
and no Electricity in most of Arkansas either for that matter, for all you
Jim Mangrum fans out there.)

J.N. said he and his brother used to sleep in the dust out in their yard 
at night to get cool.
Mud evaporates better and thus cools better than plain sweat.
They didnt have lawns in southern IL in the 30's., just packed clay that 
they swept clean.
(and they didnt have yard police either, so it was not all bad.)
