Recent grand jury decisions in St. Louis County, Missouri, and New York City
have struck a chord with one local resident.

Holding a homemade sign that said "Black Lives Matter" on one side and "I
Can't Breathe" on the other, Chris Kade said he's had enough. While protests
elsewhere around the country have drawn massive crowds, and violence in some
cases, Kade's lone vigil was a quiet one on Thursday along North Keller
Drive, at the Avenue of Mid-America.

It was bad enough, Kade said, that a St. Louis County grand jury declined to
indict the Ferguson, Missouri, police officer who shot Michael Brown. But
then, he said, a New York City grand jury declined earlier this week to
indict the officers involved in the choking death of another black man, Eric
Garner.

"I am just outraged by the Eric Garner decision," Kade said. "It's time we
stand up against injustice."

Kade, a former Effingham Daily News reporter and editor who recently retired
from his second career as a computer programmer, said the recent Brown and
Garner deaths hit him on a personal level. Kade and wife Jo Ann have adopted
11 children over the years, several of whom are either black or bi-racial.

Kade said the Garner case was even more chilling than the Brown case because
the attempted arrest was caught on video.

"In the Michael Brown case, it was basically one person's word against
another," he said. "But the Garner incident was all caught on video."

Kade said he believes the officers involved in the Garner death should have
at least been indicted on manslaughter charges.

"I'm not saying the officers involved should have been charged with murder,"
he said. "But I don't hear anybody saying the Garner case was anything other
than a grave injustice."
