[Peace-discuss] Socialist organizations

David, that's precisely what I was pondering this morning when I wrote the below statement. I should correct, it was a Prairie Greens meeting, not Green Party. We are the local chapter of the Green Party.

Carl asked me, yesterday, what I thought we should distribute, flyers, for the market today, and I was thinking how whenever someone approaches us supporting our goal of anti-war how pleased I am, only to have my enthusiasm dampened upon learning they simply blame the republicans, or Bush. Our current flyers, with indepth information related to war and targeted killings are excellent sources of information for those that share our anti-war sentiments, but for those who are unaware of the wars we have been conducting, or the history of impoverishment and war we have created, perhaps a simple bullet point flyer needs to be constructed. In any event I find I am always pleased when someone with a socialist background exhibits more knowledge than I possess of US treachery, and wish there was a means of replicating their education.

That was one of the reasons I approached the subject with Mort, David Johnson, etc. at our Prairie Greens meeting, wondering if there was another group in the area, that would be worth linking up with to form a joint venture so to speak, in an effort to educate, recruit, form a vanguard etc., etc. It wasn't my intention to bash the socialist organizations or discredit them in any way, just venting my disappointment that they seem to have disappeared.

Yes, they do "get it." My sense is that some times squabbles over doctrine obscure the basic political decency. In another sense, there are issues with tactics and "vanguardism." The question, as always, is: How do we contribute to a politicized view of the world among working class people that is constructive, and leads to organizing and mobilization?

My thought for the day:

At a recent Green Party meeting some of us were discussing and criticizing some of the socialist organizations out there, as we tend to critique all political organizations. However, I do believe that the socialist organizations whether it be ISO, SWP, etc. do educate their people, in that whatever leanings they take on they do "get it". The problem of mere reforms, or focusing on identity issues, embracing neoliberalism, is not something in which they indulge. They understand the deep rooted complexities involved in changing society and the need for systematic change.
