MIDEAST URGENT ACTION: BULLETIN -- Thursday, 11/7/02-1 (AM--USA:EST)

First Edition (11/7/02)

There are two actions that need to be taken TODAY.

1) Richard Gephardt will be announcing later today that he will not be
seeking re-election as House Minority Leader. Given his performance as the
leader of the "Republican-Lite" wing of the Democratic party, we can all
breath a sigh of relief. The two candidates to succeed him will be Nancy
Pelosi of California and Martin Frost of Texas. Suffice it to say, Rep.
Pelolsi voted against the recent Iraq war resolution, and Rep. Frost
supported it. 'Nuff said.
ACTION REQUESTED: If your House member is a Democrat, insist that he/she
support Nancy Pelosi for the leadership position. Call today, and keep
calling until the issue is decided. You can find your rep's phone number i=
n
the government section of your local phone book.

2) It is reported that he latest US-written Iraq resolution will come up
for a vote in the Security Council tomorrow (Friday, 11/8).
ACTION REQUESTED: In a recent communication with the French UN ambassador's
office, they requested faxes against the resolution to be sent to
212-421-6889 / 212-207-8765. You may also call them directly at
212-308-5700, email: france at un.int. The Russians also have a veto and may
be reached at 212-861-4900/4901/4902, fax: (212) 628-0252, web:
http://www.un.int/russia/home.htm#english. Please also call the Mexican
delegation (Ambassador Adolfo Aguilar Zinser, Representante Permanente de
M=E9xico ante las Naciones Unidas, . (212) 752-0220 - Fax (212) 688-8862,
e-mail: mexico at un.int), since Mexico appears to be the deciding vote (nine
are required) among the non-veto-bearing members of the current Security
Council.
