Operation American Freedom: Democracy NOT Empire

Date: Monday April 28th, 2003
Time: 12:00 pm
Location: Quad
Event: Rally
Speakers:

Joe Moore - Chicago Alderman who championed an anti-war resolution to a
46-1 approval, and is now working tirelessly to drop charges on peaceful
protestors arrested on the famous March 20th "Taking of Lake Shore Drive."

Danielle Chynoweth - Urbana City Councilwoman who succeeded in making
Urbana one of nearly 200 Cities for Peace in the U.S.

Daria Roithmayr - UIUC law professor will discuss the limits on academic
freedoms seen over the course of the last year

Ali Ammoura - Former member of Illinois Student Government and anti-war
activist

On Monday April 28th at 12pm, Student Peace Action will be
sponsoring an anti-war rally on the quad. The purpose of this event will be
to reflect on the conflict with Iraq, and the implications it has had on th=
e
national community. Specifically, our speakers will discuss a range of
topics exploring the health of democracy in the United States. Daria
Roithmayr, a UIUC law professor, will discuss the intrusion on academic
freedoms and other liberties during the course of the last year.
Meanwhile, we will have a host of speakers that will discuss the
revitalization of civil society that has occurred via the recent anti-war
movement. Ali Ammoura will talk about his experience presiding over the
passing of an anti-war resolution in Illinois Student Government (ISG).
Danielle Chynoweth, Urbana City councilwomen, will discuss her work on
a similar resolution that passed before the Urbana City Council. Finally,
Joe Moore, a Chicago Alderman, will discuss his triumphant work in
getting an anti-war resolution passed in Chicago by an astounding 46-1
vote.
=09 We are writing to request your group=92s co-sponsorship of thi=
s
event.
Now, more than ever, it is important for the peace movement to feel
empowered. The movement to oppose the war on Iraq was the biggest of
its kind prior to the commencement of war, and this fact will prove to have
a lasting legacy. This legacy will be important as the Bush administration
decides upon its next pre-emptive strike.
=09 Co-sponsorship entails allowing us to advertise your group on our
flyers, and helping us with promotion among your group. No monetary
contribution is necessary, though certainly appreciated.

Solidarity,
Student Peace Action
