SUPPORT RESOLUTION FOR TRUSTEE CARROLL AND AGAINST N-G RACISM

***Responses can be sent to David Roediger at droedige at uiuc.edu***

The resolution below was recently approved by the Afro-American
Studies and Research Program and is now being circulated for the
widest possible support, on and off campus. The column to which it
refers is Loren Tate's "CHICAGOANS MIGHT SHOVE CHIEF AWAY"
(November 12, 2003). In it, among much general Chicago-bashing,
Tate specifically laments Trustee Carroll's leadership on the Chief
issue, not only because she "didn't attend the UI [and] doesn't understand
downstate traditions," but also specifically because she
is "someone who by her presence brings race into the [Chief] debate."

BECAUSE THE END OF SEMESTER IS NEARING, IT IS IMPORTANT TO BUILD BROAD
SUPPORT QUICKLY. IF YOU SUPPORT THIS RESOLUTION AS AN INDIVIDUAL, PLEASE
REPLY IMMEDIATELY TO THAT EFFECT. FORWARD IT ALSO TO OTHER POTENTIAL
SUPPORTERS AND TO LIST. WE ALSO SEEK ENDORSEMENTS OF GROUPS AND ENCOURAGE
SUPPORTERS TO TAKE THE RESOLUTION TO THEIR COMMUNITY AND STUDENT
ORGANIZATIONS, CHURCHES, UNIONS, AND DEPARTMENTS AFTER ENDORSING AS
INDIVIDUALS.

Sincerely,
Dave Roediger

WHEREAS Loren Tate, the featured sports journalist at the
NEWS-GAZETTE, recently argued that it was improper for African American
Board of Trustees member Dr. Frances Carroll to fully participate in debates
over an issue of importance to the University of Illinois due to her race,
and

WHEREAS the University of Illinois is a great university
serving all of the people of Illinois, and

WHEREAS students, faculty and staff of color, who are vital
to the current successes and future possibilities of University of Illinois,
will accept no questioning of their "presence" on campus or limitations of
their right to discuss any issue,

We therefore request that Loren Tate and NEWS-GAZETTE
management issue a full and speedy apology to the university community and
especially to Dr. Carroll.
