Internationally acclaimed, Oscar and Emmy nominated producer/director,
Frederick Marx, whose film Hoop Dreams was labeled one of the best films ever
by Roger Ebert, will be a Guest-in-Residence at Unit One/Allen Hall 10/27-11/7.
He will be screening films, leading discussions, and giving workshops
throughout his residency. All programs are open to the public and take place in
the South Rec Room of Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory, Urbana unless noted. See
below for the schedule of his events. Call 333-8351 or check our website

co-sponsored by the George A. Miller Committee and the Chancellor’s Brown v
Board of Education Commemoration Committee.

7:00pm – Watching the News – How does the network news shape what we think?
What are the biases? We will watch a network news show together and analyze the
style and content.

Wednesday, October 29
8:00am – Yoga and Meditation – Marx will lead a meditation after the yoga class
(main lounge)
7:00pm – Hoop Dreams – Screening of this ground-breaking documentary labeled
one of the best films ever by Roger Ebert and Utne Reader 
7:30pm – Boys to Men? The Necessity of Initiation and Mentorship for Teenage
Boys- Millercomm talk at Levis Faculty Center 

Thursday, October 30
8:00am – Yoga and Meditation - Marx will lead a meditation after the yoga class
(main lounge)
7:00pm – Hoop Dreams Hoopla - Screening of Hoop Dreams related shows: Higher
Goals, The Hoop Dreams Reunion, and some select Hoop Dreams outtakes.
Discussion of all the issues related to the film: production, distribution,
Academy Awards.

Saturday, November 1
12:00pm – Filmmaking Workshop - meet at lunch in the cafeteria to talk about
ideas for filming and then go out on a filmmaking excursion

Highlights include Dreams from China, House of UnAmerican Activities, and
Bullshit and Balls.

Frederick Marx is an internationally acclaimed, Oscar and Emmy nominated
producer/director with 25 years in the film business. His film Hoop Dreams
played in hundreds of theatres nationwide after winning the Audience Award at
the Sundance Film Festival.  It was on over 100 “Ten Best” lists nationwide and
was named Best Film of the Year by critics Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel, Gene
Shalit, and Ken Turran and by the Chicago Film Critics Association, and Best
Film of the Decade by Ebert.  Hoop Dreams is the first in Marx’s planned
trilogy of feature documentaries on teenage boys. Marx began his movie career
as a film critic and has worked both as a film distributor and exhibitor.
