Dear Friends,

Every year the PRC distributes anti-"Chief" buttons and stickers to the
graduating class, in order for anti-"Chief" graduates to voice their
opposition to the racist symbol of the University of Illinois, "Chief
Illiniwek."

FOR THE GRADUATES

Congratulations on your achievement!

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO WEAR A STICKER AT GRADUATION: According to the
University's Commencement booklet, "jewelry, flowers, or emblems worn on
the cap or gown are inappropriate." However, inappropriate doesn't mean
it is prohibited. The 1969 case of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent
Community School District (US Code 393, Section 503) ruled that the
First Amendment protects symbolic speech, such as wearing buttons during
graduation ceremonies.

Anti-"Chief" activists will be at several ceremonies prior to the
procession distributing the buttons and stickers. Please be on the look
out for us and pick up a button or sticker! If you are participating in
a ceremony that we will not be present at, and would like to wear a FREE
sticker, there are five places on campus you can pick them up:

   **African American Cultural Program: 708 S. Mathews (Urbana)

   **Asian American Cultural Center: 1210 W. Nevada (Urbana)

   **La Casa Cultural Latina: 1203 W. Nevada (Urbana)

   **Native American House: 1206 W. Nevada (Urbana)

   **Illinois Disciples Foundation: 610 E. Springfield (Champaign), NW
corner of Springfield and Wright; buttons and t-shirts are also
available here (M-F 12-5pm)

Graduates, you can also support the anti-"Chief" movement by buying UI
merchandise that doesn't use the "Chief" logo or "Fighting Illini."

ANTI-"CHIEF" MERCHANDISE

We have a wide selection of anti-"Chief" t-shirts and buttons! We also
have bumper stickers that say "Anti-Racism, Anti-'Chief.'" And we also
have PRC "Organize" t-shirts! You can view this merchandise and order

So stop by the Illinois Disciples Foundation office (NW corner of
Springfield and Wright St. in Champaign) Monday through Friday from
12noon-5pm to pick up your anti-"Chief" merchandise! Or order online
