The Recession is Over...FOR WHOM?
A Public Forum
Wednesday, December 1, 5:30 PM

Working people continue to suffer in the face of unprecedented attacks on our living standards. 14.8 million people around the country, roughly 9.5 percent of the population, are unemployed, and more than 671,000 are unemployed in Illinois alone, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This number does not even count millions more who are working part-time because they cannot find full-time work, or others who have given up looking for work. Meanwhile, foreclosures are at an all-time high, as banks seized a record 288,000 homes in the third quarter of this year; and in Illinois alone, one in six children is at risk of hunger.

In the face of all this, economists tell us that the recession is over, and President Obama tells us that "[W]e're making progress, step by step, inch by inch, day by day." Meanwhile, congressional Republicans tell us that the solution to our problems is to retain tax cuts for the richest two percent of the population, and President Obama has indicated a willingness to reach a compromise on this. Democrats and Republicans alike have promised to cut social programs that many of us desperately need.

What is really happening with the economy? What are the real solutions to our economic woes? And how can we fight for those kinds of solutions? Come to a public forum to discuss these questions.
