A peace related event.
Illinois will soon swear in a governor that has stated he wants to make
Illinois a "Right to Work" state (which is a euphemism for taking away the
right for workers to organize unions). The situation for workers in
Illinois will get worse in the near future.
With this in mind, the Graduate Employees Union (GEO) on campus is hitting
the pavement in November (when the weather is still rather good), rallying
with other unions, and asking again that the University provide tuition
waivers for graduate student workers in departments where they are being
removed -- the University continues to sneak in appointments that don't
provide tuition waivers, in effect setting a precedent for doing away with
tuition waivers more broadly.

-- here is the official announcement --
1. “Respect Campus Workers!” - Wednesday, Nov. 12, starting at noon at
the Alma Mater, there will be a GEO Rally to support our members whose
tuition waivers are in jeopardy. We'll hear from several students in the
Masters of Computer Science (MCS) program who do not have waiver-generating
appointments and have been unable to meet with the administration to
discuss the appointments. This is a serious threat to tuition waivers on
campus - please attend and show your support!
